Is under-the-radar Colts player making a roster push?

During the Indianapolis Colts' Thursday night training camp practice under the lights, one under-the-radar player was among the standout performers.

With this being a longer practice, players towards the back end of the depth chart saw more opportunities. Kevin Bowen of 107.5 The Fan noted that one of the players to take advantage of those reps was running back Ulysses Bentley.

"The undrafted free agent from last year first hauled in a beautiful sideline ball from Daniel Jones for a touchdown," Bowen wrote. "On the next series, Bentley IV was getting reps with the second unit, and took off down the field on a catch and run that also ended in the end zone."

Joel Erickson of the Indy Star wrote in his takeaways that Bentley "might be forcing his way into the battle for the backup running back jobs behind Taylor."

Bowen mentions that with DJ Giddens (hamstring) out right now, that's helped create more opportunities for Bentley, as well as Seth McGowan.

Could Ulysses Bentley make a roster push?​

From a roster math standpoint, it's difficult to envision the Colts keeping four running backs. Doing so takes away from another position group, and likely, one of those backs will end up inactive on game days.

So Bentley's best chance may come from hurdling one of the other backs on the depth chart. Erickson mentioned Bentley's ability to impact the passing game, which could be a differentiator for him.

McGowan seems to be picking up steam with each passing practice, adding a physical presence to the Colts' backfield.
