We've reached the likely end of the line for the legendary Lionel Messi. At least, when it comes to his play for Argentina.
After an illustrious career that saw the living icon take Argentina to three World Cup Finals in six tries, Sunday's match between Argentina and Spain will almost certainly be the last time the Argentine will play in a game for his home country. Messi is not retiring from soccer altogether. He is likely just retiring from play with Argentina, though he still has to make a formal announcement.
The reason why? Well ... Messi is 39 years old! While he's still got plenty of years left in his regular life, Messi is already quite old when it comes to excelling at this level of soccer. People his age are not usually thriving in professional sports, which makes it remarkable that he even has Argentina in this position. Messi would turn 43 during the next World Cup in 2030 if he were to still play for Argentina then.
And that, quite obviously, just doesn't seem realistic.
Enjoy Messi shining for the country he loves while you still can. Sunday's World Cup Final will probably be the last time you see him wearing Argentina's colors in a monster match like this.
