USMNT forward Folarin Balogun was sent off with a red card in the 64th minute of the Round 32 game between the United States and Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Balogun's red card came about 20 minutes after he gave the U.S. its first goal of the game. The 24-year-old was shown a controversial straight red for a foul on Tarik Muharemovic in the second-half of the game. Nonetheless, with the U.S. playing with 10 on the field, Balogun's teammate Malik Freeman still scored a second goal to clinch the win.

With the red card, Balogun had to exit the game and leave his team one man down, but that's not all: he'll also be forced to miss the next game against Belgium.

Balogun has been one of the most crucial players for this standout American team, scoring twice in the opener against Paraguay and once against Bosnia. It's not confirmed who Mauricio Pochettino will start as a striker in place of Balogun, but it should be either Ricardo Pepi, who started against Türkiye, or Haji Wright.

If the United States advances past Belgium, Balogun will be allowed to return to the field in the quarterfinal round.

Can the USMNT appeal Balogun's red card?

Brazilian referee Raphael Claus did not initially book Balogun, but after being called by VAR officials to review the play, gave the American player a straight red.

According to a FIFA spokesperson, per The Athletic, a team cannot appeal against a red card or the subsequent suspension. Still, all red cards are automatically referred to FIFA’s independent disciplinary committee for assessment.

Article 66.4 of the FIFA regulations states that "A sending-off automatically incurs suspension from the subsequent match. The FIFA judicial bodies may impose additional match suspensions and other disciplinary measures," meaning that Balogun's suspension could be extended if FIFA deems it necessary.

Balogun will be able to attend the upcoming USA vs. Belgium game at Lumen Field, but he will not be able to enter the U.S. dressing room, the stadium tunnel or the team's technical area. He's also not allowed to sit on the team bench or attend warm-ups.
