What started off as a dream of a top-15 win in front of a sold-out Carver-Hawkeye Arena crowd quickly evaporated into a nightmare for Iowa. The Hawkeyes lost to Purdue, 78-57, saw some of their fans leave the game early, and are now on a 2-game losing streak.

“(Purdue was) pretty big, and so it was tough to get some shots off, but I think we just got to be better about, like, reads,” said Cam Manyawu, an Iowa junior forward. We got two on the ball passing out, and just having better reads I think that is kind of our biggest thing that we have to get better at when it comes to playing size and just taking better shots.”

“Obviously I didn’t do the right things because our team didn’t perform, so ultimately it’s my fault,” said Ben McCollum, Iowa men’s basketball’s head coach. “If the team doesn’t perform that’s my fault. That’s the nature of being the coach, and so there is no one else you can blame other than me. It is what it is. I didn’t have them ready, and it’s my fault. I need to fix it. I thought we had a good game plan, (but) we just couldn’t set our defense because they were in transition so much, and then they got a few too many offensive boards to start, and I thought that really hurt us as well.”

“Credit to Purdue. They are a great team, and they have been playing together for four years and you can see it, and they are just tight-knit, they stick together,” said Bennett Stirtz, an Iowa senior guard. “They had three straight losses in conference play, but they are still on one of the best runs, hottest teams in the country. So credit to them, but I don’t think we were ready to play today and it definitely showed, and we are sorry to our fans who showed out and had to watch that.”

There are no breaks for Iowa. Next up is a home game against a tough Nebraska Cornhuskers team on Tuesday.
