Purdue’s bench sparked the Boilermakers fourth straight win and third straight on the road as it handles Iowa 78-57.

Purdue got instant offense from its bench at Carver-Hawkeye Arena on Saturday from Gicarri Harris. Harris knocked down a three to give Purdue a 7-5 lead four minutes into the game. Then he added an immediate exclamation into the game and a poster.

On a fast break, Gicarri Harris got the ball on the right side of the floor, flew up, absorbed contact, and threw down a filthy dunk and drew the foul for his second basket of the game.

Harris would add two more three-pointers in the first half for 12 points to lead the Boilers. Purdue’s bench would add an and one from Daniel Jacobsen and a three-pointer from Omer Mayer and have 21 points off the bench. Purdue held Iowa to just 25 points as a team in the first half.

Trey Kaufman-Renn was a man possessed on the glass, helping building a six rebound edge in the first half for Purdue. Kaufman-Renn had 11 rebounds in the first half.

After starting just 1 of 7 from three, Purdue finished the first half making 5 of its next 9 three-pointers.

Purdue went into half with a 36-25 lead with Iowa leader Bennett Stirtz scoring just 7 points on six shots in the first half and the Hawkeyes shooting just 8 of 28 as a team.

It was Purdue’s starters that got it going in the second half, pulling Purdue away from Iowa by as much as 58-31 with 11:33 to play.

CJ Cox hit four three-pointers in that stretch. Jack Benter and Fletcher Loyer both added a three, and Purdue’s defense continued to stymie Iowa’s shooting from the floor.

Things would get chippy between both teams. Iowa’s frustration went up against Purdue’s size and officials had to review Daniel Jacobsen getting knocked down and potentially tripped. A common foul was confirmed, and the route continued.

Braden Smith helped his cause to overtake the all-time NCAA assists record with a game-high 12 assists.

It was a balanced effort around Smith with Gicarri Harris, CJ Cox, Fletcher Loyer, and Trey Kaufman-Renn all going for double-digits.

Purdue was 12 of 30 from three while Iowa was held to under 40% shooting from the field.

This was Matt Painter’s 250th win. He’s now just the fourth coach to achieve this.
