Instant Analysis To Patriots Upgrading Fullback Position With Reggie Gilliam originally appeared on NESN. Add NESN as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
The New England Patriots have plenty of positions to address during free agency and only so much time to do it...
If the club intends on putting itself in a position to regularly contend, it will have to put together another near-flawless offseason as it brings aboard pass-rushers, wide receivers, offensive linemen, linebackers, and tight ends -- and they reportedly kept things moving with the addition of fullback Reggie Gilliam.
Let's take a look at the newest tenant at One Patriot Place!
Bio:
Reggie Gilliam
Position: FB
Height: 6’
Weight: 244lbs
2026 Age: 28 (Aug. 20, 1997)
2025: 17 G
The Patriots signed Reggie Gilliam because:
If you have a need, you fill it...
The Patriots used two tight ends/one tight end and one fullback on 15.3% of their snaps (the league's fourth-highest rate) last season, but finished with negative expected points added per play out of their primary fullback grouping (-0.02), according to team reporter Evan Lazar. Jack Westover didn't fit the mold. Brock Lampe was an undrafted free agent who missed the entirety of last season with an injury.
Gilliam was needed to help push things back in the right direction, and in earning a deal that comes in at an average annual value of $4 million, according to Mike Garafolo of NFL Media.
Gilliam was a crucial piece in helping James Cook finish as the NFL's leading rusher (1,621) in 2025, earning more playing time than any season of his career while also becoming one of their most used special teamers -- finishing with 235 snaps played on offense and 332 snaps played on special teams.

The Patriots' next move should be:
I don't know... maybe sign someone who can catch the football...
Gilliam will rarely have the football in his hands, so while he might end up being an extremely valuable member of the offense, it's time to add at tight end and wide receiver -- the options are plentiful, too! Chig Okonkwo has been floated as an option to play behind Hunter Henry. Romeo Doubs and Juaun Jennings have reportedly been checked in on as potential options to be added alongside Kayshon Boutte and Kyle Williams.
It's time to go get one of those guys.
