The Ravens are assembling a strong defensive staff and added Anthony Weaver as defensive coordinator after the former Miami assistant coach returned to Baltimore to join Jesse Minter's staff. The former Dolphins defensive coordinator under Mike McDaniel, Weaver was a finalist for the head coaching position that went to Minter and landed two interviews, and was also a finalist in Arizona and Pittsburgh.

When Mike MacDoald departed two years ago, the then-defensive playcaller wasn't the only significant defection in Baltimore, as Weaver took his talents to Miami for a shot at being a defensive coordinator.

With the move now official, we're conducting an immediate analysis.

Anthony Weaver is a RAVEN

The saying in Baltimore is that you aren't officially a Raven until you defeat the Pittsburgh Steelers. Weaver knows that feeling as a player and a coach. Weaver played seven seasons in the NFL as a defensive end for the Ravens (2002-2005) and Houston Texans (2006-2008) after being a second-round pick out of Notre Dame. Weaver returned to Baltimore in 2021 as part of John Harbaugh's staff, serving as a defensive line coach. He was Harbaugh's assistant head coach for his final two seasons.

Weaver is accomplished

Jessie Minter is going to be the primary playcaller, but Weaver understands good defense. In Weaver's first season with Miami, the Dolphins ranked fourth overall in total defense despite having just one Pro Bowler on their unit, defensive back Jalen Ramsey. In 2025, the Dolphins ranked No. 22 in the NFL in yards allowed despite trading some of their top players at midseason. Baltimore ranked 24th in total defense and 31st in pass defense in 2025.

Weaver has worked with some of the best

Weaver has worked under various coaching styles, including John Harbaugh, former Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel, Mike MacDonald, Minter, and former Houston Texans head coach Bill O'Brien.

Weaver is closing in on a head coaching job

Before three rounds of interviews with Baltimore, Arizona, and Pittsburgh, Weaver previously had interviews with the Atlanta Falcons and Washington Commanders after the 2023 season, and with the Chicago Bears after the 2024 season. He completed another interview with the Falcons on this cycle.

Weaver was a finalist for the Commanders' head coach opening in 2024, but the job instead went to Dan Quinn.
