During a recent appearance discussing quarterback contracts around the NFL, insider Tom Pelissero provided insight into what a future extension for Baker Mayfield could look like and why the situation is more complicated than it may initially appear.

The discussion centered around Mayfield's unique journey with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. After arriving in Tampa Bay on a one-year deal worth roughly $5 million following stops with the Panthers and Rams, Mayfield rebuilt his value and eventually signed a three-year contract worth approximately $100 million.

At the time, that agreement placed Mayfield among the league's middle tier of starting quarterbacks financially. However, the quarterback market has continued to climb, creating a new challenge for both sides as future negotiations approach.

According to the NFL Media's Tom Pelissero, Mayfield currently ranks around 16th among NFL quarterbacks in average annual salary at roughly $33 million per season. The larger point was that while Mayfield remains among the quarterbacks viewed as franchise starters, he now sits near the bottom of that financial tier as quarterback contracts continue to rise across the league.

That creates a difficult question for Tampa Bay. Should Mayfield's next deal fall closer to quarterbacks' earnings in the mid-$40 million range annually, or has the market shifted enough that a contract approaching the $50 million to $60 million range becomes realistic?

The discussion also noted that any extension would impact more than just the quarterback position. General manager Jason Licht and the Buccaneers front office must balance Mayfield's future contract against upcoming deals for younger players while continuing to build a competitive roster around him.

Perhaps the most notable takeaway was that there appears to be mutual interest in getting a deal done. However, determining exactly where Mayfield fits within the current quarterback market could be one of Tampa Bay's most important decisions over the coming months.

For now, Mayfield remains one of the NFL's more interesting contract situations, as the Buccaneers work to determine what value should be placed on a quarterback who helped stabilize the franchise following the retirement of Tom Brady.
