Baker Mayfield speaks out on his current contract situation

Buccaneers quarterback Baker Mayfield has not spoken about his current contract situation. He has no obligation to do so nor does he have to. He can leave that up to the team and his representation to figure out and not say a word.

But that changed a bit Friday.

Speaking to the media at the AdventHealth Training Center for his youth football camp, Mayfield was asked of the state of his contract talks to which he said they are ‘not anywhere close’ to where he was thinking they’d be.

“Not anywhere close to what we were thinking,” Mayfield said. “Would love to be here long term but as of right now that’s not exactly the case. But I’m under contract for 2026. The guys in that locker room, the staff know that I’m still gonna be me. I’m still going to do everything I can to help this team win a Super Bowl. To me that’s the priority. Everything else will take care of itself.”

The veteran signal caller is entering the final year of a 3-year, $100-million contract. The team has let it be known that they are prioritizing re-signing their quarterback and keeping him the cornerstone of the franchise.

However, judging by Mayfield’s comments, that isn’t happening anytime soon.
