BLOOMINGTON — Indiana football defensive end Tyrone Burrus Jr. will not face charges following his arrest on Thursday, according to Monroe County chief deputy prosecutor Jeff Kehr.
Burrus was released from the Monroe County jail at 12:49 p.m. on Friday after being held overnight, per a jail official. The Bloomington police arrested Burrus on strangulation and domestic battery charges.
According to Bloomington police captain Ryan Pedigo, officers responded to a physical disturbance around 3 p.m. on Thursday at an apartment in the 200 block of E. 20th Street.
“It was reported that one of the involved individuals had been sprayed in the face with pepper spray,” Pedigo said in a statement to The Herald-Times. “It was determined that the disturbance involved Tyrone Keith Burrus, Jr. and Kira Marie Motley.”
The officers learned that they were in a relationship and Motley had been living in Burrus’ apartment since early July.
“On July 23, the pair reportedly began arguing about Mr. Burrus going to the apartment complex pool with friends without Ms. Motley,” Pedigo said in a statement. “Both reported to officers that they were battered by the other during the argument, with Ms. Motley reportedly spraying Mr. Burrus in the face with pepper spray during the incident and Mr. Burrus reportedly grabbing Ms. Motley by her neck with his hand, thereby restricting her ability to breathe.”
They were both taken into custody without incident. Motley faced a domestic battery charge as well, but Kehr said his office won’t be pursuing charges against either individual.
“We determined that the case cannot be proven beyond a reasonable doubt,” Kehr said in a statement to The Herald-Times.
Indiana athletics didn’t have any comment beyond the statement they issued on Thursday night in response to Burrus’ arrest.
“IU Athletics is aware of the situation,” an IU spokesperson told The Herald-Times. “We will continue to gather facts, cooperate with and monitor the legal process, and take further action as the evolving situation warrants.”
Burrus, a Warren Central grad out of Indianapolis, played in two games last season while redshirting. He made his college debut in IU’s 56-3 win over Purdue and made his first career tackle. He had a more prominent role in the Peach Bowl against Oregon with injuries piling up for the Hoosiers at defensive end.
Going into 2026, Burrus was part of a large group of young defensive lineman looking to crack into Indiana’s rotation. He came through with a sack in IU’s spring game.
Burrus originally committed to Louisville, but ended up signing with the Hoosiers in 2025 as the No. 9-ranked player in the state.
