Male actors again. Could be a pretty controversial topic here...

Tom Hardy

I don't dislike him, as I've liked him in a few movies, but don't see how he is an A-List actor.

Honorable Mentions:
Will Smith
Christian Bale
Samuel L. Jackson
Joaquin Phoenix

Again, I don't necessarily dislike these actors, just think they are overrated.

Tom Cruise. Never bought him as an action hero (whether Mission Impossible, Jack Reacher, etc)

IMO, he's the most annoying actor for sure. But Magnolia and BOT4thOJ save him from being in the most overrated in terms of ability club.

Why is he annoying? It's funny, I've heard that a lot, but I've never heard good reasons why. Usually it's some nonsense about jumping up on couches--many simply don't like him personally, so they really aren't engaged with his acting and his performances. Both you and Jon haven't provided any context.

Well, I usually see him in a role as Tom Cruise, not as a character. It's "a Tom Cruise movie".

I'd agree with that.

Why do YOU think your actors are overrated?
How very Republican of you to answer a question while not really answering it and posing another deflective question... ;)

Anyway, Hardy is decent playing a certain type of character--a bruising strongman, preferably as a supporting character. See Inception and The Warrior for example. Even Dunkirk. But I look at a movie like Venom, and how he is acting in it, and it just doesn't fit for me. Something just seems off when I see him in a leading role like that.

Do you like Harrison Ford? Because he fits into that role even more.

I don't dislike him, but yeah I'd say that usually fits him too. I thought he played a great character in The Fugitive and a few other films though.

it's so weird that people don't buy Cruise as an action hero considering he's ACTUALLY doing death defying action stunts himself repeatedly whereas NO other action star does.

My least favorite/overrated is the guy who plays Dr. Strange. Can never remember his name, that's how much I dislike him.

I try to separate the actor from the person but I have a real problem doing that with Tom Cruise. I can't fault his performance in any movie I've seen but it's a real challenge to talk myself into watching anything with him in it. I certainly wouldn't call him overrated though and especially not as an action star.

So, for overrated I'd go with Ryan Gosling followed by Joaquin Phoenix. As Chaplin mentioned earlier, I don't think either of them are bad actors, just not A list.

@AzStevenCal burner account confirmed. ;)

Ha! After reading MCD's post I was going to change my favorite actor vote to Jason Statham just to bring some much needed balance to the world.

I am firmly convinced that people that call Statham overrated simply don't watch enough Statham. Actually, I believe that people who walk this earth simply don't watch enough Statham. And that includes people who roll, crawl, hop or just sleep on this planet too.

hard to pick just one...most are over rated and none are nearly as fantastic as they think.

But I might pick Johnny Depp.... dude was awesome as Jack Sparrow but carried that character into a few other roles...like he was stuck or something.

Depp has done some fantastic stuff and when he really puts his mind to it I think he is one of the best in the business...just seams he rarely takes a role seriously anymore..... I was thrilled to see him in the tourist,...it showed he still had the chops when needed and could do more than play insanity....I just tivo'd Murder on the Orient Express...interested to see how he does with that.

I like Depp, but many consider him among the very best and I just dont think his work over the past ten years or so carries that kind of weight.

funny I list him here,... The Ninth Gate is one of my favorite movies, lol

This is exactly my feeling and I expressed it in this forum a while back. I NEVER believe him. He is always Tom Cruise and never the character.

He was great in Gilbert Grape and so many other films too. But he's kinda become a victim of excess success or something.

I definitely think that description fits the bill in the last decade, but would argue otherwise before that.

Watching his performances, I get the feeling that since his first pirate movie he's just laughing at all us little people and the movie industry in general.
