Welcome to smokescreen season.

Earlier today, ESPN's Adam Schefter published an article that said the Denver Broncos have been making calls about potentially trading up in the first round of the 2025 NFL draft.

Following that report from Schefter, other reporters have suggested Denver could trade up for a top running back, perhaps even Boise State's Ashton Jeanty.

Interestingly, NFL Network's Ian Rapoport went on KOA Radio on Monday night and said while he does not expect the Broncos to move up for a running back, he could see the team trading up to target a wide receiver (via KOA's Ryan Edwards).

Ian just said that he would be surprised if the #Broncos traded up in the 1st round for a running back but could see them moving up for a receiver https://t.co/nFMoVjkY8e

That's an interesting statement from Rapoport because coach Sean Payton has consistently downplayed the team's need at wide receiver this offseason.

The conflicting narratives bring back memories of last year when Payton launched a massive smokescreen to make teams and pundits believe he was considering trading up for quarterback J.J. McCarthy.

Now, with this year's draft just a few days away, there are reports once again that Denver could move up. There are a few possible scenarios. Either the Broncos are just doing their due diligence, or they actually are considering moving up, perhaps for a receiver and Payton has been downplaying the WR need as a smokescreen.

We'll find out on Thursday evening.
