THROOP – Senior athletes who collected medals and set records throughout the spring concluded the high school track and field season on a picturesque Sunday afternoon at the Mid Valley Athletic Complex.
Two talented performers had one final shining moment as Scranton senior Anijha Turner and Western Wayne senior Robbie Carrelle earned most valuable player awards and led the Lackawanna Track Conference teams to wins over the Wyoming Valley Conference teams at the inaugural senior all-star meet.
Turner won the 100-, 200-, and 400-meter dashes, leading the LTC girls team to a 57-56 win.
“It was a really fun meet to participate in,” Turner said. “It was great to get a last meet in and have a fun meet before we have to start working hard to race in college.”
Carrelle won the 110 hurdles, the 300 hurdles, the pole vault, and as a member of the 400 relay team, the LTC boys earned a 62-47 win.
“I am so happy to be a part of this in its first year,” Carrelle said. “It was such a fun time after the whole season. It was a nice, relaxing meet, and everyone was having a good time. It was a lot of fun.”
Both Turner and Carrelle will continue their academic and athletic careers at East Stroudsburg University.
In addition to the outstanding efforts of Turner and Carrelle, awards were also given to the standout performers on the track and in the field for both meets.
Lakeland’s Kaylyn Davis, who won the 300 hurdles and the javelin and was a member of the winning 400 relay while also adding a second in the 100 hurdles, was the girls Track Athlete of the Meet.
Wyoming Area’s Taylor Gashi won the girls shot, discus, and triple jump to earn the girls Field Athlete of the Meet.
Wilkes-Barre Area’s Kevon Creech won the 100 and 200, finished second in the 300 hurdles, a race he did for the first time since his freshman year, and was a member of the second-place 400 relay team. He was selected as the boys Track Athlete of the Meet.
Mountain View senior Jacob Ficarro won the triple jump and was second in the long jump to claim the boys Field Athlete of the Meet.
