Abington Heights’ Domenic Peters, Mallory Knott, and Ava Lawless, and Riverside’s Tavian Branch earned titles at the Pennsylvania High School Powerlifting Championships on Saturday at Jim Thorpe High School.
Peters set a state record with his lifted weight in the squat, bench press, and deadlift of 1,225 pounds in the Men’s Raw Varsity 163-pound weight class. Knott had a three-lift total of 410 pounds to win the 114-pound class, and Lawless won the 152-pound class in the Women’s Raw High School competition that led the Lady Comets to the team crown.
Branch, the highly coveted football lineman recruit, had a three-lift total of 1,350 pounds to win the Men’s Raw Varsity 265+ weight class and lead Riverside to the small-school (Class 1A-Class 2A-Class 3A) team championship.
Athletes competed in the Raw Varsity, Raw Junior Varsity, Raw Youth, and Equipped Divisions. Parkland High School won the boys Class 6A team title.
Peter, who is undefeated at No. 3 singles as a member of the Abington Heights championship tennis team, powered up 475 pounds in the squat, which also set a state record, 260 pounds in the bench press, and 490 in the deadlift for a total of 1,225. He took home the title by edging Riverside’s Angel Grande, who had a 405 squat, 245 bench press, and a 500-pound deadlift for a total of 1,150 pounds.
His squat bettered the old mark of 440 pounds and his total eclipsed the record of 1,155.
“It was a surreal moment,” said Peters, 18, who is headed to Notre Dame. “I have been working for this for a couple of years now, and each time I came up short. Getting the squat and the total was really great. It showed that all the years of hard work had really paid off.
“My mindset is now straight into tennis. I have gone through this process over the last few years, so I know what to do. I am in full tennis mode to do everything that I can to help my team at districts and maybe make a state run.”
