Meadville local Gary Thomas recently qualified for a world strongman competition with his performance in the log press and axle deadlift.
Thomas, who trains primarily at the Meadville YMCA, competed at Static Monsters in Wadsworth, Ohio, on Feb. 21. He lifted 210 pounds in the log press and 650 pounds in the 18-inch axle deadlift. His total of 860 pounds placed him seventh in the 50-plus masters division in the world.
Thomas will compete at the 2026 Static Monsters World Championships in Phoenix, Arizona, in September.
