Much has changed in Delaware over the past 70 years, but one football game remains a First State favorite that has stood the test of time.
The DFRC Blue-Gold All-Star High School Football Game will be played for the 70th time on June 18.
Kickoff is at 7 p.m. at Delaware Stadium in Newark, where Delaware’s top football players who recently graduated from high school collide in a North vs. South format.
Blue-Gold has long been more than just a football game, however, serving as a valuable fundraiser and community builder.
Tickets may be purchased online at bluehens.evenue.net/event/BCC26/DS0618 or at the stadium beginning at 3 p.m. on June 18.
Prices range from $12 (bleacher seating) to $23 (cushioned club seats).
Parking lots open at 3 p.m. with tailgating permitted. Stadium gates open at 5 p.m., and pregame ceremonies start at 6.
Blue is on the home (west) side, and Gold on the visiting (east) side this year.
DFRC, which stands for Delaware Foundation Reaching Citizens, has raised nearly $7 million to benefit children with intellectual disabilities since the game’s 1956 inception.
The pregame union of players and other game participants with their “buddies,” the children with whom they are matched for various Blue-Gold activities, is annually among the most stirring scenes in Delaware sports.

Players decorate their helmets with stickers from opposing high schools, as rivals become teammates.
All high schools south of the Chesapeake & Delaware Canal put their players on the Gold roster, as do Red Lion Christian and Newark Charter north of the canal. The Blue comprises players from all the other northern schools.
The Blue has won 36, including the last four, the Gold has won 30 and there have been three ties.
“They’re gonna clog us inside. We’ve gotta be able to create space because we’ve got a lot of speed with our skill guys, and we have four quarterbacks who are very mobile [Appoqunimink’s Desai Drummond, Middletown’s Derian Cunningham, Seaford’s Vince Evans III and Lake Forest’s Jackson Parson]. In a game like this where it’s gonna be hot, we want to be able to get them running sideline to sideline, get the ball in space and then, when the opportunity presents itself, get back into our run game and start chipping away.”
“The physicality of our football team is definitely a strength. The first few practices, we’ve been very intense, both sides of the ball. We know they have a lot of speed. They have very good quarterbacks and so being able to protect on the back end and things like that could present a problem potentially for us.”
