Borussia Dortmund is chasing a third straight pre-season win when it hosts AS Roma in both teams’ final friendly of the summer.

AS Roma will visit Signal Iduna Park on Saturday, targeting just a second win from five pre-season outings when it takes on Borussia Dortmund. The Giallorossi’s sole victory thus far in pre-season is a 4-1 win over League Two outfit Newport County, having also suffered demoralizing defeats to both Cardiff City and Brighton.
Dortmund, meanwhile, has racked up three friendly wins from five this summer, including back-to-back victories over Arsenal and FC Tokyo in its last two games. The Black and Yellow beat Arsenal 3-2 at the Emirates Stadium last Sunday, where new signing Konstantinos Karetsas scored his first goal for the club.
Roma’s marquee summer signing, Santiago Castro, has already made his mark for the club after scoring and assisting in the win over Newport. Donyell Malen has also hit the back of the net since the former Aston Villa loanee signed a permanent deal in Rome, but coach Gian Piero Gasperini won’t be hugely encouraged by his team’s results in pre-season so far this summer.
The only previous meetings between these clubs came during the quarter-finals of the UEFA Cup in 1993 when Dortmund overturned a first-leg deficit to advance as 2-1 winners. Home advantage proved crucial in those clashes, and Niko Kovac will hope to repeat history by leading his team to a third straight warm-up win before the Bundesliga gets back underway.
