Everything for the Houston Texans has been built around the intent of freeing up cap space for the 2026 season. So far, every move has accomplished that feat before Wednesday's legal tampering period begins.

In the last 96 hours, Texans general manager Nick Caserio has been busy wheeling and dealing against the salary cap. He traded away veteran offensive lineman Tytus Howard to the Cleveland Browns for a Day 3 pick, thus freeing up $4 million for 2026. He restructured the contracts of defensive backs Derek Stingley Jr. and Jalen Pitre, freeing up another $22 million, while the extensions of defensive end Danielle Hunter and tight end Dalton Schultz tacked on another $11 million.

And the big kicker? Joe Mixon's long-awaited release saved Houston $8 million against the cap, though for now, $6 million is going into the pocket of Detroit Lions runner David Montgomery, who was traded to Houston for two Day 3 picks and Juice Scurggs.

With all that being said, where do the Texans stand in terms of cap space entering the weekend?

According to Over The Cap, the Texans currently own $36.8 million following all the deals. That number is stll expected to span beyond $40 million when Houston extends linebacker Azeez Al-Shaair on a one-year deal, pushing more money down through 2027.

The Texans are expected to be aggressive in fixing the offensive line, targeting several interior options via free agency. The rest will come from the draft, which Houston owns four picks in the top 70.
