I just wanted to generate some conversation. Are we one elite skill player away from being a playoff/superbowl contending team? You know if you look at the Colts history in Indianapolis, they were as sorry as the Cards have been in Arizona until Manning arrived. The Colts were regular top 5 drafters for years until Manning arrived. Its really amazing what he has done for that franchise.

What would have happened if we had lost that last game in 1997 to the Atlanta Falcons? Would we still have traded the pick or would we have taken Manning?

With the Cardinals, it's hard to say what we would have done. What was painful about that game was that we were down by 3 td's most of the game. Plummer had everyone excited enough that I doubt that we would have chosen Manning. We would have traded down & still would have drafted Wadsworth. Keep in mind that there were still questions about Manning at the time. No one was sold on him being the stud that he has become. He is perhaps the BEST #1 pick in draft history. Most prognosticators believed that Wadsworth was the best player in the draft. Oh well, the curse continues!!!!

Better question would be what would the Cardinals record be if Ray Lewis were MLB or RonMac were 3years younger?

6-7 because they would have beaten the 49ers twice. Other than that I don't think one player, even P.Manning would have helped the Cards win the other games as the entire team contributed to the losses.

Well, we'd likely have won the Rams game, we would have won the two Niners games, the Falcons game, the Lions game, and we stay in the Jets, Panthers, and Bills games (I'll say we win at least one of those, the Jets game). That puts us at, what, 10-3? WOW! Holy crap, I can't believe that! Goes to show how many close games we've been in, and games where a stellar QB would have made a difference. Manning would have made teams respect the pass and opened up the run game. Sure, he'd have done faaar worse than he is now, but still very good.

Moot point, as Manning is in a league unto himself, but fun to dream, I guess.

We'd be better with Manning, but Dungy himself has said that James is the Colts' MVP this season.

I thought a big part of the offenses' problem was that teams don't respect our running game and so overplay the pass on defense. It sure would explain why none of our QB's could do anything and our highly rated WR's can't get open.

Fair assessment, Stout.

Now people, ask yourself how many games the Cardinals would have won with P. Manning as QB last year. Then try to convince me that the Cardinals are no better off than they were last season!!!

We would have traded down to the middle of the first round and taken two players that are of 2nd round talent.I mean that's what we did when had the chance to select the best QB since Manning and passed.

Dungy may have said that but Manning is the best QB this year I have ever seen and I have watching NFL football for 60 years. There is no one and I mean no one more valuable to his team than Manning this year. He will walk away with the Pro Bowl voting. I will be supprised if he does not get every vote. That team has a mediocre defense and Manning carries them on his back game after game. Without him they are a mediocre team. If I were starting a football team from scratch Manning would be my first pick of any player in the NFL.

The Colts were playoff contenders a few years before they crumbled enough to net the #1 pick for Manning, even coming within a hail mary of the Super Bowl. That's a smidge better than the Cards . . .
