The Pirates have placed rookie shortstop Konnor Griffin on the 10-day injured list because of a forearm injury.

The 20-year-old phenom had been dealing with right forearm soreness, forcing Pittsburgh to briefly move him from shortstop to designated hitter in order to keep his hot bat in the lineup. The organization opted to give Griffin more time to recover, planning to eventually bring him back to his primary position at 100 percent.

After a slow start to the 2026 season, Griffin found his rhythm in May, boosting his overall slash line to .270/.327/.402 with four home runs, 22 RBIs and 14 stolen bases through 51 games. When is he expected to rejoin the Pirates?

Here are the latest updates on Griffin's status and his projected return date.

On May 31, the Pirates placed Griffin on the 10-day injured list because of a right forearm strain.

Pirates general manager Ben Cherington said that Griffin is progressing well, and he didn't seem concerned about Griffin missing an extended stretch.

"Based on the information we have now and the progress he's made since this cropped up, we remain optimistic that he'll be back playing for us before too long," Cherington told reporters on May 31.

"But, obviously, we'll be careful with it and need to listen to him. We'll put him out there when he's ready to go out there."

Cherington said that it's too early in the recovery process to offer an exact timeline, but Griffin could be available to play during the Pirates' next homestand, which runs from June 9 through June 14.

To fill Griffin's spot on the active roster, Pittsburgh activated Ryan O'Hearn from the injured list. O'Hearn provided an immediate offensive boost for the Pirates in his return game, hitting a home run in a 9-3 win over Minnesota on May 31.
