Jayden Wareham left Reading over the summer following the expiration of his contract, with the 22-year-old striker opting for pastures new, despite the Royals offering the former Chelsea man a new contract.

Wareham chose Exeter City for his new destination with the opportunity to claim the number nine shirt, which had formerly been retired after the passing of Adam Stansfield.

Another potential key factor for the change of scenery was the length of contract offered to the striker, with reports suggesting Reading were only willing to offer one-year deals while transitioning over to new ownership.

Wareham has made himself popular down at St James Park, scoring 19 goals in all competitions so far this season (16 in the league), including an eight-minute hat-trick away at Peterborough United.

Statistically Wareham is looking good, managing 2.57 shots at goal per 90, with 1.06 shots per 90 coming from headers – meaning that, despite his shorter stature, Wareham is still able to hold his own against bigger defenders in aerial duels.

The former Chelsea man also averages 0.53 goals per 90, which is nearly double what he managed in his time at the Select Car Leasing Stadium – only 0.28 goals per 90 in his last season in Berkshire.

Every statistical piece of data has improved for Wareham since joining the Grecians, leaving a few questioning what could’ve been had Reading kept their striker.

However, the Royals did sign Jack Marriott following Wareham’s departure and the numbers the former Derby man has managed since joining have stopped fans from missing their former forward too much.

Both strikers did find the net when Reading travelled down to Devon earlier in the season, with Marriott opening the scoring just six minutes in, only for Wareham to equalise five minutes later.

Wareham and Marriott have also been nominated for the League One player of the month award for February, but at the time of writing we are still awaiting for the announcement of the winner.

To summarise, Wareham has managed to raise his game since leaving Reading, joining a side that suit his strengths, going direct whenever they get the ball, leading to an increase in his shots per 90 and resulting in an increase in goals.

All this has built up his confidence, leading to Wareham becoming Exeter City’s biggest goal threat this season as the club aim to stay in the division for a fourth consecutive year.
