How does Jerod Mayo play into the New England Patriots making the Super Bowl this year?

Well, Mayo, a former Patriots linebacker turned inside linebackers coach, ran New England as its head coach for a year after longtime coach Bill Belichick stepped away from the program.

Mayo seemed destined to follow in Belichick's footsteps after the latter left the team, but a 4-13 season left the Patriots unenthused at another season with Mayo at the helm.

His firing paved the way for former Patriots linebacker and Tennessee Titans coach Mike Vrabel to return to New England as its head coach. In his first season back with the team, Vrabel has the Pats playing for a Super Bowl.

Where would New England be if it had given Mayo another season? We're not sure, but it is quite surreal to track where the Patriots were when Mayo got elevated to head coach and where the team is now with Vrabel.

Maybe Mayo will get another chance to be a head coach one of these days.
