How I Met Your Dad has its protagonist: Frances Ha star Greta Gerwig.

Gerwig will play Sally in the comedy pilot from the How I Met Your Mother creators, which will tell a similar kind of story from a female point of view. Mother creators Carter Bays and Craig Thomas will be executive producers, and Gerwig will serve as a producer and is expected to write.

If CBS picks it up as a series, Dad would likely shoot in New York. The pilot, which will feature new characters, will be produced in Los Angeles, where Mother, which is set in New York, is filmed.

In Dad, Sally is described as "a female Peter Pan who has never grown up and has no idea of where she's going in life." She feels she has nothing in common with her husband of less than a year and a break-up is inevitable, but she has the support of friends and family as she moves forward.

Saw this today and the title has been bugging me.

If A is "How I Met Your Mother" then B should be "How I Met Your Father."

I realize it is a spin-off with new characters, but for the sake of consistency...

Not really look forward to this. I am a big fan of HIMYM but I also felt like it was time for the show to go. They are simply going to replace characters, rinse and repeat.

Meg Ryan’s role will mirror that of Bob Saget from the original CBS series, Deadline reports. Saget was the voice of future Ted (present Ted was played by Josh Radnor) on HIMYM. Meg Ryan will do the same for future Sally.

Very few spinoffs end up being successful. Only a handful of spinoffs from highly rated sitcoms that made it come to mind. Those I can think of are(shows they were spunoff from in parenthesis):

The Jeffersons(All in the Family)
Maude(All in the Family)
Good Times(Maude via All in the Family)
Laverne & Shirley(Happy Days)
Mork & Mindy(Happy Days...yes Mork made an appearance on Happy Days)
Frasier(Cheers)

These are the only ones I can think of that were equal to or even surpassed the success of the shows they spun off of. Some spinoffs had moderate runs but in the end weren't very successful like Rhoda which was a spinoff of the Mary Tyler Moore Show. Speaking of which, Lou Grant had critical success, however, I'm strictly talking sitcoms and Lou Grant was a drama.

I think The Andy Griffith Show has to be considered one of the most successful spinoffs and while I didn't love it I certainly preferred it to Make Room For Daddy (AKA The Danny Thomas Show) that the show came from. Also, the most successful comedy show that's technically a spinoff is probably The Simpsons which originally aired as part of The Tracy Ullman Show. I don't think that Petticoat Junction or Green Acres ever really approached the success of Beverly Hillbillies but they were fairly successful spinoffs.

I can think of probably twenty other spinoff comedies through the years although I suspect you're right, few fail to capture the success of the original. Obviously, there have been a lot of very successful spinoffs in the hour long format with all the various Star Trek, Law and Order, NCIS, CSI franchises that have frequently dominated the programming schedule. But given the success of other spinoffs and the huge success of HIMYM, I'm not at all surprised they are trying it again.

I said I could think of twenty more comedy spinoffs but I swear those weren't among them. We never watched any of them when they were first on but we caught an episode of the original show recently and we were both surprised to see how bad it was. How in the world did that show run for eight seasons and spin-off two others series? As bad as it was though my husband suggested they re-make the series and put it on HBO so at least they can upgrade from soft, soft, soft-core porn to something worth showing. I offered to call Joyce Dewitt and Suzanne Somers and pitch the idea for him.

Three's Company lasted 8 seasons.

The Ropers lasted 2 seasons - 6 and 22 episodes, respectively.

Three's A Crowd lasted 1 season with 22 episodes.

The best spinoff of all time most dont know is a spinoff and that is the simpsons. It was originally a sketch on the Tracey Ullman Show. Two other very successful ones are Angel and Melrose Place

I was keeping to sitcoms and more recent because Gomer Pyle was a success also.
