Anthony Gordon was back in the starting XI again and played an important role as England beat co-hosts Mexico 3-2 in a thriller in the last 16 of World Cup 2026.

The Barcelona new signing has had to put with some criticism at the tournament but bagged two assists off the bench last time out as the Three Lions beat DR Congo.

That performance was enough to convince Thomas Tuchel to put Gordon back into the starting XI against Mexico and he delivered another important contribution.

Gordon won the crucial penalty for Harry Kane to make it 3-1 to England after Tuchel’s side had been reduced to 10 men when Jarrell Quansah was sent off for a foul on Jesus Gallardo.

Gordon played the full 90 minutes and was crucial in England’s 3-2 victory over Mexico, securing a place in the World Cup quarter-finals.

Here’s what he made of it all after the game.

“It was really, really difficult, really hard, the altitude, one man less,” he told ITV Sport.

“We had one man less, so you have to do more. You’ve seen I went from left wing, to striker to center-mid. You have to make good decisions, run more than you used to, sacrifice, that’s what we were doing in the end. We were blocking everything.”

Gordon also spoke about the hard work that goes in on the training ground.

“We work so hard in training, I hope you believe me, we push each other so hard. I know when adversity comes, we are going to be ready,” he added.

“If you train harder than the game is going to be, then it becomes much easier. Because we push each other so hard, in those moments, it becomes second nature.”

How did you rate Anthony Gordon’s performance and are you more excited now to see him in a Barcelona shirt?
