In retrospect, history can often appear to be all but inevitable. But in reality, it is often almost anything but, and this dictum tends to hold true in the NBA as well. Such was the case with Hall of Fame Boston Celtics small forward Larry Bird, who very nearly quit the game he became one of the greatest to ever play even before he had gone pro.

But the Hick From French Lick did not become a garbageman after his first stab at college went a lot worse than he likely expected it to. How did Larry Legend earn such an apt sobriquet with the Celtics, then?
