Jamar Chaney, Mississippi State
Height: 6-1. Weight: 242.
Projected 40 Time: 4.64.
Combine 40 Time: 4.51.
Benchx225: 26. Vertical: 39.

This guy could very well be there when we pick and his a heck of an athlete and a pretty damn good football player in the SEC.

BTW even though I believe 40 times are overrated he did run the fastest time of all LBers at the combine.

Analysis Read & React: Moderate reading his keys and diagnosing what's coming at him. Marginal vision to avoid the trash and beat the running back to the edge. Quick to accelerate to the ball after recognizing the play. Disciplined defender who maintains gap control and trusts teammates.

Run defense: Looks smaller on film than his program-listed size. Can be engulfed by blockers and doesn't have the upper-body strength or punch to disengage quickly. Marginal lateral quickness to avoid blocks.

Pass defense: Former weak-side linebacker with the athleticism and understanding of pass defense to remain on the field in passing situations. Good depth in coverage.
Tackling: Effective drag-down tackler. Breaks down well in space against smaller, shiftier athletes. Good hustle in pursuit but too often makes plays well downfield. Reliable open-field tackler, but isn't a punisher (one forced fumble in 27 career starts).

Pass Rush/Blitz: Only occasionally used as a pass rusher as an inside linebacker and is exclusively a stand-up pass rusher. Lacks a versatile repertoire of pass-rush moves and needs an open lane to close effectively.

Intangibles: Productive special teams defender. Broken lower right leg suffered in 2008 will require further medical evaluation at the Scouting Combine.
NFL Comparison: Robert Thomas, ex-Rams/Raiders

Sounds like he is projected as a 4th-5th round prospect. I'd take him at the end of the 3rd if there's no one else more desirable.

Not sure but PFW lists these as his negatives...

"Instincts are lacking...speed does not translate to field...not physical..will run around blocks...inconsistent tackler"

Overall they say he is a better athlete than football player and will have to make his mark on Special Teams, they project him in round 4 or 5.

I wrote just the other day that I would like him. From what I have heard, he was surrounded by almost zero talent that lead to a lot of his struggles and lack of national attention.

I am putting a mock together and I have him picked with our 2nd 3rd. I like Chaney or Butler out of Washington.

per Scouts Inc.

Overall Football Traits

Production 2 "2005: (11/3) 31 tackles. 2006: (12/11) 66 tackles, 7.5 TFL, 2.5 sacks. 2007: (13/12) 89 tackles, 3.5 TFL. 2008: (1/1) 12 total tackles in season opener before season-ending injury."
Height-Weight-Speed 2 "Good height and bulk combination. Also ran impressive 40-time in spring of 2008, but we're not sure he still possesses the same top-end speed after injury."

Durability 4 "Suffered a season-ending ankle injury in the 2008 opener and was granted a medical redshirt, allowing him to return for the 2009 season. Also suffered MCL strain versus WVU in 2007 and was limited the following week versus Kentucky."

Intangibles 3 "Denied admission to Georgia out of high school, so was released from original scholarship. There are questions regarding mental capacity but he's a hard worker with a leadership presence on defense."

Inside Linebacker specific Traits

Instincts/Recognition 2 Great starting experience at the highest level. Adequate natural instincts. Continues to improve his read-and-react skills. Is quick to react once he has diagnosed. Solid overall awareness.

Strength/Toughness 4 "Has good size and enough overall strength to stack and shed. He also shows adequate toughness and plays with a great motor. However, in order to become a more complete player at the point of attack he must improve his hand usage and lower-body strength."

Range vs. Run 2 Very good overall range. Is quick and fast for his size. Can play sideline to sideline when protected. Only issue is that he needs to do a better job of disengaging from blocks in order to maximize his range versus the run.

Tackling 3 "Can improve in this area. Closes quickly and does a solid job of wrapping up in space. Not as explosive as his size-speed combination would indicate, though. Will struggle to fill in short-yardage situations. Not a thumper. "

3rd Down Capabilites 2 Has excellent potential in this area. Very fast for his size. Good agility. Excellent range in zone coverage. Gets a very deep drop. Ball skills need some improving. Struggles a bit to find the ball in the air. Doesn't have a lot of experience as a pass rusher but has potential in that area because of outstanding closing burst.

Trait Scale

1 = Exceptional 2 = Above average 3 = Average 4 = Below average 5 = Marginal

I think Chaney would be a good pick in the 3rd if we don't get an ILB in the 1st two rounds.
Here is another mid rounder who might work. Does anyone know more about this guy?

Dekoda Watson Outside Linebacker | Florida State | SR
Height: 6-1⅜ | Weight: 240 | 40-Time: 4.56

Official Bio

Strengths:
Terrific athleticism --- Very good speed --- Quick with a burst --- Great change of direction skills --- Long arms --- Reliable tackler --- Sideline-to-sideline range --- Does a nice job in pursuit --- Able to match up in coverage --- Tough --- Smart --- Competitive --- Hard worker --- Leader.

Weaknesses:
Severely undersized --- Doesn't play strong --- Average instincts and awareness --- Has trouble getting off blocks --- Will get pushed around at times --- Will not be a fit for every system --- Durability is a concern.

Notes:
A three-year starter for the Seminoles --- Named 2nd Team All-ACC in 2009 --- Battled knee and elbow injuries as a junior and underwent Tommy John surgery in the offseason --- Was slowed by a groin injury as a senior --- Suspended for three games, along with a number of teammates, in 2008 for his role in a cheating scandal --- Needs to play in a scheme where he is kept clean and allowed to flow --- Possesses a very impressive blend of talent and intangibles --- The next in a long line of speedy, athletic Noles linebackers and will attempt to follow in the footsteps of guys like Marvin Jones, Derrick Brooks, Ernie Sims and a half dozen others --- Played hurt the past two seasons and that has hurt his stock --- Potential steal who could thrive in the right situation.

I've been thinking about this cat as well Shane.

I think the place you look for him is in the 3rd round. Barring the picks made in round 1 and 2, I would take him with our first 3rd round pick. Even if he becomes a very solid backup/special teamer, we need quite a big quality upgrade in our LB corps.

Much more suited for a 43 D. You can't have soft LBs who get pushed around by blockers in our scheme or the likes of Justin Forsett and Ryan Grant will run all over your defense as seen last year.

We are in need of an immediate starter at ILB, not projects like Daryl Washington, Dekoda Watson and Jamar Chaney etc who only fit a 43 scheme at the moment.

Jamar Chaney - ILB 6'0 3/4 242 lbs Mississippi State

I posted in another thread a little something about this guy from some observations I've seen from some actual game film, but after his solid combine, it prompted me to look a little more in depth.

First off, I'm going to say that personally, I feel his combine time was a fluke. Yes, I think it was a fluke. I think he plays faster than his 4.54. He is said to have been a pretty consistent 4.48-4.49 guy. After his top performances in 6 catagories, the 40, bench press, vertical, 3 cone, 20 yard shuffle and the 60 yard shuffle, I think he's just put himself on many teams radars.

He is said not only to be a true workout warrior, but he is also a real student of the game. He is said to be the first one in the film room and the last one to leave. He is an emotional leader on the field, on the sidelines and in the locker room. He is a high character kid.

On the field, he has great sideline to sideline range. He is very quick to diagnose plays and is very rarely fooled by misdirection, playaction passes or complex blocking schemes. He reacts quickly to the snap of the ball and knows exactly where he is supposed to be. He has full confidence in his teammates and trusts that they will be where they are supposed to be. He rarely if ever has any lapses in his assignments and is very aware of any receiver trying to slip behind him while in coverage. Is very capable in coverage whether it be man or zone, but he excels in zone coverage. Numerous times on film, I have seen him run step for step with a wideout 50+ yards down the field however. Not a tight end and not a running back, but a wide receiver. Will allow some catches to be made as he doesn't always turn his head and locate the ball, but he is usually so tight in coverage that he immediately is in position to tackle the receiver. He is not much of a pass rusher.

Playing the run, he demonstrates superb gap control and discipline. Will not leave his assignment to try to make a spectacular tackle, instead he will lock his gap down until the other defenders box him in. He will then assist in bringing the ball carrier down. He is not said to be very physical, however, in the film I've seen of him, he can be very physical when needed. He uses his hands very well and has a variety of moves to slip the blocks. He has beaten many double teams with excellent hand maneuvers coupled with his quickness. Is better in pursuit than given credit for, often running 40 yards across the field to assist in making a tackle. Is not a huge hitter normally. Will not punish the ball carrier, instead, he relies on near perfect technique when tackling, however, he does tend to tackle high on occasion, but he always wraps up the ball carrier. He plays with generally good pad level and always keeps his head up. Very high motor and is relentless from snap to whistle. Has solid leg drive. Very good instincts and is almost always around the ball.

He does need to work on staying low when making a tackle. Sometimes, he seems to rely a little too much on his athleticism and as a result will occasionally take bad angles. Although he is more physical than I initially thought, in order for him to have real success at the NFL level, he will need to get stronger, which should not be a problem for him (especially if he gets to work with John Lott ;)). The broken leg he suffered seemed to have hampered his production a little this past season, as at times he seemed a little tentative, but after watching some of his game film from 2007, I was assured that he is alot more aggressive than I originally thought. I think another year removed from the injury will do him good. Scouts say that he has the room to add another 10-15 pounds on his frame without losing much speed. This can only help him.

Summary: I think he has all the tools needed to develop into a high quality ILB in a 3-4. I see him as a perfect eventual replacement for Gerald Hayes. Not the prototypical "thumper" as most would desire for the SILB, but he has all the range needed to play the position. His solid tackling coupled with his athleticism and range to play the run and cover would give us an added dimension to our base defense and he certainly has the ability to be a 3 down LB used in our nickel packages. Couple him with A.J. Edds or Sean Lee on the weakside, and we'll have a very formidable ILB tandem for years to come.

They can't find him - he's rumored to be working out at an "undisclosed location."

AKA - I have him rated #5 (behind McClain, Spikes, Weatherspoon and Washington.

Jamar Chaney, Mississippi State, 6-1, 242, 4: He started at inside and outside linebacker in college and was just beginning to show outstanding pro potential when his progress was interrupted in 2008 by a broken leg. He returned in 2009 to lead the team with 90 tackles, including 4½ for a loss, two sacks, two interceptions and two forced fumbles. After making the Senior Bowl with a late invitation, Chaney impressed scouts in practice and was named defensive MVP in the game after collecting eight tackles and a fumble recovery. - Frank Cooney, The Sports Xchange, NFLDraftScout.com/CBS Sports/USA TODAY
