HORSEHEADS, N.Y. (WETM) – Summer college baseball is underway in the Twin Tiers.

The Horseheads Hitmen and Elmira Pioneers each cruised to impressive home victories, on Saturday. In the NYCBL, the Hitmen rocked the Genesee Rapids 14-5 at the Holding Point Complex. After falling behind 2-0 in the 2nd, Horseheads exploded for 10-straight runs through 6.

Following the offensive onslaught, which included 3 RBI from Mason Sanno and a 3-run blast by Marco Pulizzi, the Hitmen would surrender 3 Genesee scores in the 7th and 8th. Despite the small rally, the home team responded with a trio of RBI-singles by Liam Annand, Johnathon Panarese, and Edison grad Niko Cheplick, to cap off the win.

On the mound, Odessa-Montour grad Daniel Lewis went 7 innings for the Hitmen, allowing 3 hits, 3 runs, and 6 walks, while striking out 8. Colin Klemann closed out the final 2 frames with 2 earned runs on 5 hits.

In Dansville, the Hornell Steamers suffered a tough 16-6 defeat. Despite the 7-inning rout, Hornell’s Beno Ballard went (2-3) with a 5th-inning grand slam.

Horseheads returns to action on Sunday, for a road rematch with Genesee at 2 p.m. The Steamers host the Gliders on the same day at 4 p.m.

In the PGCBL, the Elmira Pioneers picked up their 2nd-straight win in dominant fashion. The Pios powered past the Geneva Red Wings 11-1, in 7-innings. Elmira outscored the Red Wings 6-1 through 5 frames, before adding the finishing touches. Ryan Gabianelli highlighted the early offense, with a 3rd-inning RBI-single and 5th-inning RBI-sacrifice fly.

Brett Baker then added an RBI-triple to his 1st-inning RBI-single in the 6th, before Brandon Doubek delivered his 3rd RBI of the game, Edison grad Thomas Cheplick scored on a wild pitch, and Michael Gardner homered.
