LEXINGTON, Ky. (FOX 56) — The horse named after the University of Kentucky's head basketball coach, Mark Pope, debuted in its first race Saturday.
"Coach Pope first ever race today at Saratoga Springs as the number 2 horse. Number 9 horse is Coach's Pals...owned by the great Rick Pitino. Let's Go!" Pope wrote on X.

Coach Pope, owned by Gainesway Stable and Shamrock Stables, raced for the first time at Saratoga Springs as the No. 2 horse under Hall of Fame jockey John Velazquez, according to Equibase.
Coach Pope is a 2-year-old trained by Kenny McPeek in Lexington and looking for its first trip to the winner's circle.
