HAMILTON, BERMUDA — There’s been no shortage of outstanding accomplishments on the local sports scene over the course of the past few years.

From 1,000-yard rushers on the football field to 1,000-point scorers on the basketball court, fans have been treated to record-setting performances on a regular basis.

Just recently, though, one local woman celebrated a milestone moment that nearly defies belief. Two weeks ago, Honesdale’s own Amy Neugebauer traveled more than 800 miles to a remote island paradise for the prestigious Chubb Bermuda Triangle Challenge.

There, on Jan. 18, Neugebauer completed the 100th marathon of her career — an awe-inspiring feat that she never set out consciously to accomplish.

“I just truly love running,” Neugebauer said. “It might seem like kind of a lonely individual sport, but it really isn’t. I’ve met so many wonderful people through running and the camaraderie is amazing.”

Neugebauer won’t be basking in the glory of her latest achievement for long. She’ll be flying off to Japan on March 1 for the 2026 Tokyo Marathon, which will be no. 101 on her dazzling resume.

Setting the stage

Amy Neugebauer’s running career didn’t begin until 2007 when at the age of 34 she decided to run a local 5K.

A 1991 graduate of Honesdale High School, she didn’t get serious about distance running until 2009 when on a whim she entered her first Steamtown Marathon.

“I made the decision just a few days before the race,” Neugebauer said. “I had no idea what I was getting myself into. I just showed up at the starting line with a bag of gummy bears pinned to my shirt and took off.”

Finishing that first epic race, though, gave her the confidence and drive to set some truly ambitious goals.

Over the course of the next 17 years, Neugebauer competed in marathons all over the world — from Boston and New York to London and Berlin. She’s also run in unexpected places like Reykjavik, Iceland. However, she doesn’t hesitate in naming her all-time favorite.

“A lot of people ask me that question and my answer never changes,” Neugebauer said. “The New York City Marathon has always been my favorite. I love the energy and the atmosphere. I’ve run it 12 times and there’s really nothing like it.”

Which brings us to 2026…

CrossFit connection

In mid-January, Neugebauer traveled to the island of Bermuda to take part in the Chubb Bermuda Triangle Challenge.

This year’s edition of the event featured three races in three days. Neugebauer ran the 5K on Friday and the 10K Saturday. On Sunday, she completed the quest by finishing her 100th career marathon.

Neugebauer covered the challenging 26.2-mile course in a time of 5 hours and 11 minutes. She placed 76th overall and 4th in her age bracket.

“You would think the more you run a marathon the easier it gets,” Neugebauer said. "But, it’s not true. There have been times that I’ve stopped and actually cried. But, I’m not a quitter, so I just keep going.”

A group of 16 friends from CrossFit Honesdale at the Garage also made the trip to Bermuda. Neugebauer has been an integral part of this local organization for several years, acting as coach of an enthusiastic running community.

“We absolutely love having Amy here,” said co-owner Chris Novoa. “Amy and I started out as coaches together at CrossFit a few years ago. Her passion and her amazing personality have really helped grow the running culture here.”

Co-owner Sarah Novoa agrees.

“To know Amy is to love Amy,” she said. “Her joy for running is contagious. Honestly, whatever Amy touches just blossoms. One of the things that makes this place special is that people come for the fitness and stay for the community. Amy is a huge part of that.”

Neugebauer has earned all sorts of awards and accolades over the course of her distance running career. In addition to a roomful of medals and trophies, she was also inducted into the Wayne Area Sports Hall of Fame back in 2021.

While she admits that she’s blessed with focus, drive and uncommon dedication to her sport, Neugebauer is quick to add that she’s extremely grateful to all those who’ve supported her along the way.

“My husband, my dad and my family have been amazing,” she said. “They’ve been there for me every step of the way. I also love all my CrossFit friends and I can’t wait to share more travel adventures with them.”
