Archbishop Hoban baseball coach Derek Carmichael encouages his players to "be tough" on the diamond.
"That is what coach talks about all the time, and it is really true because this team doesn't have the DI [college] guys that the other teams had in previous years," Hoban senior Andrew Karhoff said Friday, May 16, following a 8-5 win over St. Vincent-St. Mary at Canal Park.
"We gotta figure out how to do it in other ways because we don't hit as well as we did last year or we maybe don't have the arms that we did last year, but it is about everyone stepping up and everyone doing their job."
Hoban's batting lineup flexed its muscles Friday with an eight-run first inning en route to a win over rival STVM (16-8).
Hoban (15-6) had six of their 11 hits in the first inning as the top four in the order (junior Grady Falkenstein, Karhoff, sophomore Breyan Stewart and senior Blake Bantum each batted twice.
"We were aggressive and sticking to our plan that we had at the start of the game," said Bantum, a Bluffton Unviersity recruit. "We just came out swinging. ... A lot of people have stepped up; underclassmen, freshmen, sophomores, everybody."
Falkenstein, Karhoff, Bantum, junior Brady Wachter, senior Will Givens, sophomore Dashel Hemlick, senior Cade Marks and senior Nico Cella each reached base in the first inning against STVM and scored a run.
"We were obviously super aggressive early," Carmichael said. "We executed the gameplan early. ... I think we did a good job of hitting a lot of line drives."
Karhoff doubled in Falkenstein and Bantum doubled in Karhoff to make it 2-0.
"Grady Falkenstein set the tone, beating out the infield single to start the game," Carmichael said. "Our gameplan was to be aggressive. When a guy beats out a two-hopper, that is aggressive."
Hemlick contributed a three-run triple that scored Bantum, Wachter and Givens to make it 5-0. Cella laid down a safety squeeze bunt that scored Hemlick, Falkenstein singled in Marks and Cella scored on a passed ball.
"We were aggressive and everything fell in the first inning and it didn't fall the rest of the game," said Karhoff, an Ashland University recruit. "It is about being aggressive, hitting balls hard, going where it is pitched. I think that is the first time this year we really came out ready to go and played as well as could."
Givens finished with three singles. Falkenstein, Karhoff and Bantum each had two hits. Karhoff struck out two in two innings, Freshman Matthew Ramsey struck out five in 4⅓ innings to get the win and Hemlick recorded the final two outs with strikeouts to record a save.
"We had a freshman and a sophomore finish the game [on the mound]," Carmichael said. "... We are pitching it a lot better and we are playing a lot better defensively. I think each week we are getting better and better offensively. It is a brand new lineup from last year. Not a ton of guys with a ton of experience, but Archbishop Hoban is still on our jersey, so the expectation is still high with those guys and they are starting figure it out and they are starting to step up."
Hemlick said "trusting each other" is paramount to success on the diamond.
Givens said there is a "bond" and "tight relationships" amongst the players.
"Us seniors, there have been a lot of classes before us that are stacked with talent," Givens said. "We have been ready for this year. We have been ready to come together and have a great year."
STVM is enjoying a winning season under coach Ben Shepherd and showed grit in its comeback attempt against Hoban.
The Irish scored two runs in the second inning as senior Matthew Large singled in sophomore Matthew Engelhart and senior Tyler Slone singled in sophomore JJ Pytash. Pytash tripled in senior Zack Kurkey, Engelhart and junior Rylan Hurley in the third inning.
Kurkey and Engelhart finished with two hits apiece and Pytash had two walks, a hit by pitch and the three-run triple.
