DOTHAN, Ala. (WDHN)—After proving the doubters wrong throughout the year, Dothan United’s season comes to a heartbreaking end after a highly controversial match.

The Dragons welcomed Brave SC into Rip Hewes Stadium for a first-round matchup in the USL League 2 playoffs, where DUSC would fall 1-0.

But it’s not simply the fact that the Dragons lost; it’s the manner in which they did.

The Dragons came out of the gates on fire, no pun intended, putting all the pressure on Brave’s defense with multiple shots on goal in the first half.

A little over 35 minutes into the match, it seemed like DUSC was going to be the team to strike first after Oskar Kauffmann was able to find the back of the net, but the goal would be called back thanks to an offside.

Brave would capitalize at the end of the first half thanks to a goal from Kanta Ishii that sneaked past Dragons’ goalkeeper Yago Darub.

The second half was pretty much the same story; Dothan United had multiple good looks, but to no avail.

To add insult to injury, the Dragons had yet another goal called back in the second half due to a player being offside.

Two reversed goals, countless controversial penalties, and a handful of penalty calls that should have been made in favor of the Dragons were just too much for Dothan to overcome, as this magical season comes to a close.

Despite the sour ending, DUSC has a lot to hang its hat on; in the first year under head coach Ricky Davey, the Dragons finished the regular season with a 14-2-2 overall record, claimed the program’s first divisional title, and found their way into the postseason for the second year in a row.

While the Dragons will not get the opportunity to repeat as Southern Conference champions, a couple of things are for sure: the Dragons have made their mark as a powerhouse in USL League 2, and this will not be the last time we see this Dothan United team in the postseason.
