DOTHAN, Ala (WDHN) — The Dothan Dragons are taking big steps to increase community involvement with the fast-growing team.
During a press conference held Thursday afternoon, it was announced that Dothan United would allow fans to buy shares in the franchise and become part-owners of the team.
To make this happen, the team is partnering with Vicinity Ventures, an investment organization that operates throughout the Southeast.
The Dragons hope to eventually earn approximately $1 million from investors. However, as of now, they are simply gauging community interest.
Team owners say they believe the investment opportunity will only bring bigger and better things to the organization.
“Our goal is to continue to improve the value of the team. We want to have academies. We want to have young people grow up and play for our team one day, and have opportunities they have had before,” said Dothan United team owner, Mike Schmitz. “We have a big vision; we just have to take it step-by-step. We just want to continue to be the best, and to have the community join us to recruit the best players and coaches and make our community proud.
Dothan United has been one of the fastest-growing and most successful teams in the USL 2. The Dragons made the playoffs last season and won the Southern Conference Championship in just their second season.
