Donald R. Tune, a Highland Community College coach and athletic director, has died, according to a community announcement.
Tune coached the men's basketball team from 1967-1971 and again from 1980-1993, according to the announcement. He also served as athletic director before retiring.
Tune coached and taught in several locations including Flint, Michigan; Joliet, Illinois; and Cedar Rapids, Iowa, according to the announcement. He spent 3½ years in the U.S. Air Force, including a stint in Japan.
Tune is survived by his wife, Sandra; two children, Tara and Jason; and his sister, Kathy.
A visitation is scheduled from 10 a.m. to noon May 30 at Walker Mortuary, 321 West Main Street, Freeport, Illinois. A semi-formal sharing of stories will follow at noon. A reception will be held at approximately 1:30 p.m. at the Wagner House, 1 East Spring Street, Freeport, Illinois.
Tune was known for his dedication to student-athletes and his passion for sports, according to the announcement. He also enjoyed golf and was a lifelong St. Louis Cardinals fan.
"Through leadership, compassion, and unwavering dedication to student-athletes, he inspired generations both on and off the court," the announcement said.
