Like all of us, Dave McGinnis loves "high effort" players with "nonstop motors" on his defense. But I've got a question for all of us:

Mac has stated that he'd love to have 53 guys like KVB.

But can we win with 53 guys like KVB? Or do we risk having a bunch of high-effort guys who all fit the same mold.

The reason I ask started with our interest in Vonnie Holliday and the team's apparent current fascination with Kevin Williams. Can we win with a defensive front four of Wakefield, Kevin Williams, Wendell and KVB?

Or do we need a couple of role players on our D-Line - i.e. an edge rusher (Suggs, McDougle, Brayton, White) and/or a run-stuffer (Robertson, Kennedy)?

I'm concerned that we'll draft more "effort" guys like Kevin Williams, Haynes or Peterson and still not be able to rush the passer or stuff the run.

Don't get me wrong, KVB is one of my favorite players and I really enjoy watching his effort on the field because he really is a "High Effort Guy". "High Effort Guys" is an oft misused term. I see it as a euphemism to explain away poor performance or an absence of talent. Just like the term "Natural Talent Guys" would be used to explain away a lack of team or practice effort.

While having players like KVB on the field really boosts the playing level of the defensive/offensive unit, there have to be some talent at there as well. Role-players not only fit the situational need, but provide rest for the other players in the rotation. But too many "situational subsitutions" and you start getting burned because the other team can focus on your weaknesses.

To answer your question Jeff, yes this team needs more role-players. The starting four you mentioned would be good, but not scary. A balance must be struck between every-down players and role-players.

I believe he means people with KVB's effort. That doesnt mean they want guys with KVB's talent. There could be people with Suggs type talent and KVB type effort.

Watching film of Suggs, you see that he plays hard all the time, so I guess he would fit in the "high effort" mold.

I would personally classify Suggs as "Non-Stop Motor" myself. I save "High Effort" for try-hard-go-no-where types...

Hasn`t it been mentioned that Kevin Williams CAN play DE and is supposed to be very quick rushing the passer and strong also.If the Cards think he could be the Best option if Suggs or Leftwich are gone why not?Tyler Brayton is supposed to be a talented try hard type player.Another option who would be a upgrade over Wakefield.

53 KVBs would leave us without the burning wr needed to stretch defenses. also, i know he'd run with power, but i'm not sure he has any wiggle to make anyone miss in the open field. in addition, i think his coverage skills are lacking. i do, however, think he could develop the no-look behind-the-back pass. or, at the very least, try hard to do so.
