Joss Whedon to helm ?Wonder Woman?

LOS ANGELES - ?Buffy the Vampire Slayer? creator Joss Whedon is preparing to bring to life another formidable female character in his latest movie endeavor.

Whedon has signed on to write and direct ?Wonder Woman,? a live-action film adaptation of the DC Comics character, for Warner Bros. Pictures.

?Wonder Woman is the most iconic female heroine of our time, but in a way, no one has met her yet,? Whedon said in a statement. ?What I love most about icons is finding out what?s behind them, exploring the price of their power.?

He added: ?There is a woman behind the legend who is very fascinating, very uncompromising and in her own way almost vulnerable. She?s someone who doesn?t belong in this world, and since everyone I know feels that way about themselves, the character clicked for me.?

According to the lore of the comic book, Wonder Woman is the superhero name of Diana, an Amazonian princess from Paradise Island, an uncharted island to which the Amazons fled to escape domination by the ancient Greeks and Romans. She has super strength, bracelets that deflect bullets and a golden lasso that ensnares victims and forces them to tell the truth. She has, at times, even had her own super vehicle, an invisible plane.

Wonder Woman was created by educational consultant William Moulton Marston and first appeared in All Star Comics in 1941. Because of her popularity, she got her own self-titled comic series six months later. Lynda Carter played the heroine in the TV series that ran on ABC and CBS from 1976 to 1979.

Warner Bros. is known to have been eyeing a Wonder Woman feature for some time.

Whedon created the influential WB Network/UPN drama series ?Buffy? and its spinoff ?Angel.? He is in postproduction on the Universal Pictures feature ?Serenity,? which he wrote and directed based on his short-lived Fox drama series ?Firefly.?

His other writing credits include the features ?Toy Story? and ?Alien: Resurrection,? and he is penning the Marvel comic ?Astonishing X-Men.?

Stefan,

I saw this too!

It's good and its bad. It's good that we'll see more. It's bad that they are just the remaining eps we haven't seen, the failed attempt at a second season.

I really thought the show was hitting a stride at the end of the first season. Too bad.

Though, this of course opens the door for 'Faith'.

Last summer they were saying that if Tru Calling is cancelled, there's a 90% chance of "Faith the Rogue Slayer" happening. I hope it really happens.

Joss is getting into movies so I don't know how much he'd be involved in a Whedonverse project now.

I did read that another likely possibility would be a Spike spinoff.

They even asked people at the convention last summer to write to networks asking them to consider doing a Spike spinoff, but there is little interest. Even Joss' staff feels like his character is not strong enough to carry a show on his own. However, Faith is a potential lead character. James is really the only one interested in doing another spin-off. David made it clear he wasn't interested. Same goes for Tony Head, Charisma, etc.

If there is a spin off, it's gonna be starring Eliza as the lead character, James, and some new faces.

I just want another Joss show on TV,be it Buffy/Angel spin-off or something new.

And there are rumors that Carisma and Eliza are going to audition for the lead role in Wonderwoman.

I would be the happiest guy on the the block if this comes about.

But besides Eliza and James I would also add Tom Lenk the guy who played Andrew, he had some great funny scenes with Spike and thought they played off each other really well.

I will probably agree that Spike is not a strong enough character to head his own show, but I think people would definitely like to see more of him. He became what Angel was supposed to continue to be.

In many ways the Angel series got way off beam. It started with Connor and then the whole Charisma being the big bad season was just wrong (morale, don't piss Joss off). I don't think it ever quite recovered from those season.

I like Eliza and I like Faith. I agree she could (well, both she's) could head a show and I'd certainly watch it. As to other familiar Jossverse characters to hang out with her, I always loved Lorne and it's too bad Wesley bit it (what's a rogue demon?). I wouldn't mind Dawn training up a bit and becoming something other than bait. Tom Lenk's character grew up really well too and became one to watch.

As to Wonder Woman. I have to wholeheartedly go with Charisma, but I hear the frontrunner is another Jossverse actress. I don't remember her name, but she was the escort chick in Firefly. I suppose I could live with her.

Yeah, I didn't like Connor/ Evil Cordi storyline. Series was saved by Angelus' and Faith's return. As for Spike, I dislike him too much to really care to ever see him on TV again. I almost stoped watching Buffy in season five and stoped completely in season 6 because of Spike.

After watching season 7 of Buffy and season 5 of Angel I learned to tolerate Spike, but still would prefer a show without him. As for Tom, I think he did a good job in season 7, but every time I see him, it bring memories of horrible season 6.

Michelle (Dawn) is doing a couple of movies, and I am not sure what she'd be interested, but I would definitely like to see her in Joss' tv show again. I love Lorne, and I think he would be interested, but his health has been failing for some time (he had to cancel three conventions last year)

And I agree about Wes... too bad they killed him. It is amazing how his character grew from 3rd season of Buffy to 5th season of Angel.

I'd rather see Firefly get started up again. :(
