Milwaukee Brewers fans certainly had thoughts about the latest round of City Connect uniforms unveiled Thursday, April 9, with the Brewers expecting to wear the new look through the weekend and primarily at Friday home games through the rest of the year.

We received 232 responses (and a few duplicates that we discounted). As with any survey asking if readers like or dislike something – particularly when aesthetics are involved – you're far more likely to hear from those dissatisfied than satisfied. And we did.

But there's something specific that readers most disliked about the jerseys: The use of "Wisco" as the shorthand across the front, meant to encapsulate all of Wisconsin.

You gotta see these in person ❕

Choosing from a range of 0 to 5 (five being the best), the responses averaged a score of 1.9.

Here's the breakdown:

  • Rating of 0: 72 responses
  • Rating of 1: 55 responses
  • Rating of 2: 25 responses
  • Rating of 3: 25 responses
  • Rating of 4: 19 responses
  • Rating of 5: 36 responses

By far, the most common complaint was the use of "Wisco," an item that came up on 97 surveys when asked what people disliked or liked about the jerseys.

Sixty-four of those rated the jerseys a 0 or 1, and only seven 5 ratings and four 4 ratings mentioned it as something likable.

Most insisted that nobody used the term "Wisco" to describe Wisconsin and that it was often a term used as shorthand for Wisconsin Lutheran High School (or college). Some called it inauthentic, an indication that the jersey ideas were generated by people who weren't from the state.

Other criticisms included the color scheme, particularly the use of orange, and frustration that the uniform embraces a statewide inspiration as opposed to the City Connect concept.

The Brewers have explained they wanted to cover a broader footprint this time around after the first City Connect jerseys pulled references from Milwaukee specifically, and they've internally thought of these as "State Connect" jerseys.

Based on historical Brewers attendance data from a 2020 study commissioned by the Metropolitan Milwaukee Association of Commerce, about 22 percent of ballpark event attendees are estimated to live within the city of Milwaukee, 38 percent within Milwaukee County and 86 percent within Wisconsin.

Multiple surveys felt the script "W" on the hat looked like the Washington Nationals logo.

Some respondents did like the colors, and others appreciated the statewide appeal.

What readers had to say about the Milwaukee Brewers connect jerseys

Here's a sample of the comments included with the responses:

  • "WISCO? If they are going for more of a 'state' approach, they should have just used Wisconsin. The Milwaukee Brewers are already understood to be the state's baseball team, just as the Green Bay Packers are understood to be our football team. This is just another marketing ploy to sell more jerseys and, as an old fart who likes to see 'my team' play in a uniform I can identify, I don't like it." – John in Wauwatosa
  • "Why not put a beer stein on the uniform? Guess I am just a traditionalist. These monstrosities look like beer league softball jerseys." – Keith from Milwaukee (lives in Tampa)
  • "I love the fact that the uniforms are a shout-out to the entire state of Wisconsin, which has loyally supported the Brewers since they arrived from Seattle over 55 years ago. I know that my western Wisconsin hometown sure did." – Garry (lives in Houston)
  • "Blue is overdone. If you're going to connect the state, use green. A former color of the Brewers and a current color of the Packers and Bucks. Easily could tie it to the woodlands of Wisconsin." – Dan in Waukesha
  • "The vertical stripes on the sleeves are lame, the Brewers white and pinstripe home uniforms are both simple, uncluttered and classy. The new jersey is too gaudy and underwhelming." – Tom in Hartland
  • "Totally unnecessary jersey; the Brew Crew city connect uniforms are vastly superior. The color scheme is too big of a departure from the standard uniform (red?!). 'Good' alternate uniforms should complement the current color scheme/uniform or harken back to an older uniform (like the Brew Crew jersey). Too much of a departure from that borders on clown costumes (see last year's Padres City Connect jersey)." – Brian in Mount Pleasant
  • "They look like little league jerseys, but so do most of the City Connect jerseys." – Pat in Wauwatosa
  • "Absolutely awful. I'm a Wisconsin lifer. 'Wisco' is NOT a thing. It was NEVER a thing. It will never BE a thing. Stupid overpriced consultant idea. The curly 'W' was obviously ripped off from the Washington Nationals. Also, next time, ditch the overpriced marketing firm and use a focus group of Brewers fans instead of Cubs fans. Way to mail it in, like you did with the parking app last year." – Paul in Milwaukee
  • "I love the new, vibrant colors and the refresh of the design. The Wisco reference makes it more about the state, rather than just Milwaukee. More inclusive for everyone, and creates a state vibe." – Mary in Milwaukee
  • "I like the barrelman patch and the bobber detail. But overall, I am not a fan. First, no one says 'Wisco' – so this feels pretty inauthentic from the start. Second, there's no Milwaukee or even Brewers-related elements. So these jerseys feel more like a minor-league 'rebrand' night then they do a new style for a professional MLB team. It feels like the marketing team felt the first version was 'too Milwaukee' and then overcompensated to be able to sell merch to the rest of Wisconsin. But the result feels off, not Wisconsin, or Brewers or Milwaukee. All of this would matter less if they looked awesome, but they are entirely underwhelming design-wise." – Nichali from Milwaukee
  • "I feel like they are going to get a lot of flak. But, incorporating the entire state of Wisconsin into the connect jersey is meaningful. The Brewers really are the state's team. And who doesn't like a blue and orange combo?!" – Todd in Stoughton
  • "No one in this state calls it 'Wisco.' Looks like a knock-off minor-league jersey. Only reason I didn't rate this a 0 is the Barrelman logo and bobber logos are amazing." – Ben in Hartford
  • "I like how the Brewers are attempting to recognize that this is truly the state's team, but I'm not sure I know anyone who refers to Wisconsin as 'Wisco.'" – John in Marshfield
  • "Wisco was the name of a defunct gas station chain that sponsored the Milwaukee Braves. That adds confusion. 'Fill 'er up with Wisco 99!'" – Gary in West Allis
  • "Love the colors, but Wisco? Had to be something better." – Thomas in Aurora
