Now everybody cheer!
Why would he get an extension?
But Sendek has three years left on his contract so why not wait and see how the next couple years go? Facts are Sendek has roughly the same conference winning % as Mike Stoops and we fired him midseason. That makes me think you're absolutely right about the football thing, ASU seems happier going cheap and treading water in hoops than being competitive. Of course this plan only makes sense if the football program turns into a powerhouse so there's a lot riding on Graham's shoulders.Unfortunately, with all of ASUs resources going to the football stadium and other projects right now, Anderson probably realizes it would be financially difficult to can Sendek right now and pony up for someone else.
The new deal, approved Thursday, was for one year, through June 2017, with a raise to $1.5 million.
Another year would be added if Arizona State wins 20 games or reaches the NCAA tournament once over the remaining years of the contract or any extension year.
Two years will be added if the Sun Devils win 25 games or appear in the NCAA tournament three times over that same span. He would receive incremental raises with each added year.
IMO enough time has passed since the "Headache." There's no good reason why ASU shouldn't have a respectable basketball program on a regular basis.

Your AD is a football guy thru and thru. There's no sense of urgency to build a formidable men's basketball team at ASU; otherwise, Sendek would've been clipped years ago. All resources and efforts are allocated to football. Also, the reality of the situation is that whomever coaches at ASU has the dubious task of recruiting and competing against UofA, and Sean Miller isn't leaving anytime soon.
Sendek will be gone sooner rather than later, but I wouldn't expect much of an upgrade taking his place.
Duke and NC are a mile apart and neither seems to have any problem recruiting.
ASU is more known as a football and baseball school. But I do see your point, why wouldn't a one and done kid not want to go to a party school like ASU for a year and then go into the NBA, reason's got to be the coach but in all honesty what big time coach is going to want to come here unless ASU is going to make him the top paid college coach? Answer is no one because that ain't gonna happen.
At some point we need to give up on the notion of big name coaches and actually try to get someone who is going to make his name here. Every time there's a coaching search, the AD says that they only want someone who has major HC experience. They never want to risk going after an unknown. But the only guys that have proven experience that are going to come here are guys who have proven to be mediocre. Instead we need to go young. Get someone who has some charisma and is a salesman on the recruiting trail because this program can't sell itself.

According to who?ASU is a glitzy, rock star destination.
Exactly. ASU is a glitzy, rock star destination. They need a charismatic coach that pulls in that kind of talent. I find it hard to believe that a normal 18 year old kid would rather live in Tucson than the valley? Other than SoCal and maybe Seattle ASU has the best weather, entertainment, pro sports etc. And don't say Stanford or Cal because both of those schools are too academic to appeal to the one and done talent.
That doesn't make sense. Why do kids flock to places like Lexington, Louisville, Durham, Madison, and Columbus instead of "rock star destination" Tempe? And by that logic, how come USC has been largely irrelevant for what seems like forever?
College location for recruits is not as important as you may believe.
BTW--as someone who lived in the Valley for 20+ years, grew up in Scottsdale, and currently lives in Los Angeles, glitzy, rockstar location is not how I would describe Tempe or any city in Phoenix/Metro.
I guess I was being too nice suggesting ASU Basketball would be treading water with Herb. That's a really really bad loss.
