North Carolina’s tradition of producing NBA talent is expected to continue in this year’s draft, with two Tar Heels projected to hear their names called.
But while forward Caleb Wilson is widely viewed as a top-five pick, fellow big man Henri Veesaar could be in for a longer wait than originally expected.
Bleacher Report’s Jonathan Wasserman projects the 7-foot Estonian to slip into the second round as the No. 34 overall pick to the Sacramento Kings. In a previous Bleacher Report mock draft, Veesaar was projected as the No. 27 pick to the Boston Celtics.
Wilson and Veesaar anchored North Carolina’s frontcourt this past season and have both been widely projected as first-round selections. Wilson is generally expected to come off the board within the first five picks, with some mock drafts slotting him at No. 3 to the Memphis Grizzlies or No. 4 to the Chicago Bulls.
Despite the possible slide, Wasserman offered a favorable comparison for Veesaar, likening him to two-time All-Star center Nikola Vucevic.
“Henri Veesaar became one of the draft's top play-finishers who also hit 40 three-pointers,” Wasserman wrote. “He doesn't block many shots for a 7-footer, but offensively, he has become incredibly productive and efficient with a translatable and coveted inside-out scoring package.”
In his only season at North Carolina after transferring from Arizona, Veesaar earned second-team All-ACC honors. He averaged 16.3 points on 61.4% shooting from the field and 41.5% from 3-point range, while adding 8.4 rebounds per game.
