After he got to UConn, Silas Demary Jr. wanted to make a difference in the area around him.
So, the Huskies’ senior point guard, who is no stranger to giving back, used his Silas Demary Jr. Foundation to set up a back-to-school drive.
The annual bash, which has helped kids in his native Raleigh, N.C., is coming to Hartford for the first time on Saturday, Aug. 22. It will be held at the Mark Twain House on Farmington Ave from 9 a.m. to noon, and people can donate school supplies for kids in need.
The event has grown even bigger with the support of Hartford Athletic, which announced it is partnering with the foundation to hold a Back-to-School Bash at its home game on Saturday, Aug. 15.
The team will collect school supplies like notebooks, No. 2 pencils, folders, water bottles, colored pencils and more. The goal is to fill 500 backpacks.
The game is also the team’s ‘Dead Head Night,’ where it’ll celebrate the music genre popularized by The Grateful Dead with a live band (Stealhead) prior to the match, custom merch, tie-dying and more.
Hartford faces Miami FC at 7 p.m.
