England and captain Harry Kane may have failed in their mission to win the 2026 World Cup and bring football home, as their fans would say, for the first time since their victory in 1966, but at least they bowed out with a win in their topsy-turvy 6-4 victory over France. Kane sat out the match entirely but the Bayern Munich man will still have enjoyed the high scoring match regardless, which saw England earn the bronze medal.

This was not just a consolation victory, however. This 3rd placed finish eclipses any finish England have achieved in the 60 years since their solitary World Cup triumph, which @TheAthleticFC captured:

England record their highest ever men’s World Cup finish since 1966 as they beat France 6-4 in a thrilling third-place play off in Miami.

Next up for England is the home European Championship in 2028, where they and Kane will hope to go just that little bit further and finally win a trophy again.
