England is used to devastating defeats at the men's World Cup. It's been a long time since the Three Lions brought home a World Cup title — 1966 to be exact — after all. But Sunday's stunning collapse at the hands of Lionel Messi's Argentina in Wednesday's semifinal match might take the cake. For anyone emotionally invested in England's success or lack thereof at international tournaments, it's going to sting for a very long time.

You can count English striker Harry Kane among them.

In a post-match interview, Kane said he was "gutted" for everyone. That includes his teammates, the England coaching staff, and, of course, England's long-suffering fans. He even alluded to England's questionable tactical decision to sit back after taking a 1-0 lead early in the second half as a problem in the loss. Woof:

The World Cup semifinal loss to Argentina is just the latest in a recent string of heartbreaking defeats at major international tournaments for England.

England lost to Croatia in the 2018 World Cup semifinals. It followed that defeat with a penalty-kick loss in the 2020 European Championship Final to Italy. Then, in 2024, England lost to Spain in the 2024 European Championship Final. Now, it has the 2026 World Cup semifinals collapse at the hands of Argentina.

In all honesty, even though a title was not on the line, it feels like this one will hurt the most until, or if, England can finally win something meaningful.
