Hardik Pandya trade rumour: Former IPL champions eye MI captain as replacement for incubent skipper ahead of IPL 2027 originally appeared on Cricket News. Add Cricket News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
KEY TAKEAWAYS:
- Mumbai Indians look to trade captain Hardik Pandya after turbulent second stint.
- KKR and Rajasthan Royals both show interest in acquiring the all-rounder.
- IPL rules require franchise-to-franchise talks and the player's consent for any trade.
MI set to part ways with captain Hardik Pandya, opportunity for KKR?
Five-time champions Mumbai Indians appear ready to move on from Hardik Pandya, with reports suggesting two separate franchises have already shown interest in taking him on.
According to PTI, Kolkata Knight Riders and Rajasthan Royals are both in the picture and could push for Pandya.
Conversations between Mumbai and Kolkata over a possible trade have been ongoing for some time now. Pandya's second spell leading the side has hardly gone to plan, with the team managing only a single playoff finish during his tenure.

The source explained that Ajinkya Rahane was never viewed as a long-term solution for KKR and was always set to be let go once this season wrapped up.
"Ajinkya Rahane was always a stop-gap arrangement for KKR, and he was always going to be released after this season. The KKR top brass had approached MI owners towards the end of last season, but since Reliance's annual AGM was round the corner, at that time IPL trade wasn't the biggest priority," the source said.
"However, it has been learned that KKR has again approached MI top leadership and there have been a few rounds of discussion."
Should Pandya make the switch to Kolkata, whether through a straightforward trade or a cash-only arrangement, the captaincy would likely be back up for grabs, given that Rinku Singh isn't currently seen as the right fit to lead the franchise.

How IPL trade rules actually work?
It's worth noting that IPL regulations strictly prohibit any player from negotiating a trade directly with another franchise.
Such discussions must take place exclusively between the two clubs involved, and crucially, no trade can proceed without the player's approval. If a player refuses to give consent, the rules require him to be sent back into the auction pool.

Rajasthan's interest comes with a catch
The second offer on the table comes from Rajasthan Royals, which is reportedly willing to trade Yashasvi Jaiswal for Pandya, although it remains unclear how far those discussions have advanced.
Even if this deal does materialise, captaincy seems unlikely to be part of the package, since Royals management has been grooming Riyan Parag as their long-term leader.
The Bigger Picture: Which deal looks more likely?
It appears KKR currently has the edge in this race. Their talks have been running longer, the captaincy vacancy fits Pandya's profile far better, and the franchise clearly has motivation to find a leader following Rahane's expected departure.
Rajasthan's offer, while real, comes with an established succession plan already in motion for Parag. Will Pandya accept a secondary role to Parag? Only time will tell.
