Local wrestling squads are getting set to take the mat for the Schuylkill League Wrestling Championship Saturday at Pottsville’s Martz Hall.
North Schuylkill will look to defend its Schuylkill League title after winning it last season for the first time since 2005. Five Spartans won championship matches in 2025, including returning senior Cadyn McGraw.
“These guys are hungry to repeat that success from last season after winning the Schuylkill League Championship for the first time in 19 years,” North Schuylkill coach Corey Fetterolf said. “It’s always tough to repeat, and the goal is to outdo last season, and there’s enough talent in the room.”
Blue Mountain placed second and Pine Grove finished third at last year’s league meet.
Pottsville’s Terrell McFarland is seeking his fourth consecutive league title.
Returning from the podium last season are Blue Mountain’s Bryce Bodenberg, Brian Brobst and Owen Woll, Tri-Valley’s Owen Wolfgang, Pottsville’s McFarland and North Schuylkill’s McGraw.
“We want to put on a good show at the league tournament and bring home the title,” Woll said. “It’s sticking to the stuff that works best for me and doing my job for the team.”
Tri-Valley heads into the league tournament with four No. 1 seeds in Wolfgang (107), Jaxson Bruso (133), Hunter Updegrave (172) and Max Masser (189).
Williams Valley’s No. 1 seeds include Magnus Monger (121), Xzavion Tennis (139) and Camron Green (285).
Mahanoy Area’s No. 1 seeds are Arturo Reyes (127), Rory Dixon (152) and Kyler Quick (215).
Pine Grove’s Aaron Osatchuck (145), Tamaqua’s Rylan Reitz (114) and Blue Mountain’s Owen Woll (160) are all No. 1 seeds, as well.
“Luckily we have a deep lineup right now and we should be ready to go Saturday and compete for a league title,” Blue Mountain coach Alex Gosch said. “As a tournament team, we’re very tough, and we’ll show up Saturday and get guys on the podium and hopefully a league title.”
“We’ve been putting work in the room all year and just want to go out there and put our best foot on the mat and just give it our all,” Woll said.
The Schuylkill League sent five wrestlers to the PIAA State Championship a year ago: Blue Mountain’s Bradley Renninger and Woll, Mahanoy Area’s Rory Dixon and Kyler Quick, and Panther Valley’s Brenda Banks.
Following the Schuylkill League meet, local wrestlers will meet for the District 11 AA/AAA meets on Feb. 20, followed by the Northeast AAA and Southeast AA Regionals on Feb. 27 and 28. The PIAA State Championships start on Thursday, March 5.
