Four Schuylkill League programs will continue their pursuits of state championships on Thursday afternoon. Here’s what to know about each matchup.
Class 1A: Bucktail (18-5) vs. Tri-Valley (17-5)
When: 3 p.m.
Where: Central Columbia High School (Bloomsburg)
Last: Bucktail defeated Greenwood 3-2, Tri-Valley defeated Dock Mennonite 7-1
The buzz: Tri-Valley and Bucktail will meet in Bloomsburg on Thursday in the quarterfinals. The District 11 champion Bulldogs took care of business in the first round against Dock Mennonite, while Bucktail narrowly got by Greenwood. The Bucks out of Farwell in Clinton County were the District 4 runners-up. The winner will advance to the semifinals next Monday, where they’ll face the winner of District 2 champion Holy Cross and District 6 champion Claysburg-Kimmel.
Class 2A: Schuylkill Haven (17-7) vs Bristol (22-1)
When: 4 p.m.
Where: Parkland High School (Allentown)
Last: Schuylkill Haven defeated Brandywine Heights Area 3-1, Bristol defeated Philadelphia Academy Charter 15-0
The buzz: After defeating Brandywine Heights to start their state playoff run, the Hurricanes will now face a 22-1 Bristol Warriors team in the quarterfinals. The Warriors have been dominant this season, outscoring opponents 377-28. Since a loss on May 1 to Council Rock South, Bristol has won seven straight games, outscoring opponents 98-5. The winner will go on to face the winner of District 2 champion Montrose and District 7’s fourth team, Chartiers-Houston.
Class 3A: Pine Grove (24-2) vs Mifflinburg (23-0)
When: 5:30 p.m.
Where: Central Columbia High School (Bloomsburg)
Last: Pine Grove defeated Littlestown 5-4, and Mifflinburg defeated Kutztown 10-2.
The buzz: A premier showdown, Pine Grove, the District 11 champions, will meet Mifflinburg, the District 4 champions. The Wildcats have outscored opponents 220-26 this season and have allowed runs in just two of their last seven games. Pine Grove has won six straight games since a loss to Blue Mountain to end the regular season and has outscored opponents this season 276-32.
Class 4A: Blue Mountain (24-2) vs Pope John Paul II (13-9)
When: 5 p.m.
Where: Exeter High School
Last: Blue Mountain had a 6-0 win over Central Cambria, and Pope John Paul II defeated Science Leadership Academy 12-2 in the first round.
The Buzz: Blue Mountain eased past Central Cambria 6-0 in the first round and will now face District 1 champion Pope John Paul II in the quarterfinals. The Eagles are searching for their third state championship in four years and have lost just one PIAA playoff game all-time. Pope John Paul II was up and down all season but has found its footing over the last few weeks. The winner will face either District 11 champion Archbishop Carroll or District 2 champion Valley View, who defeated North Schuylkill on Monday.
