Nativity BVM and Marian Catholic each won their matchups in the opening round of the PIAA on Monday afternoon to advance to Thursday’s quarterfinals.
Marian Catholic’s win on Monday was its first in the state playoffs in nine years, and the Colts hope to build on it when they face Southern Columbia in the Class AA quarterfinals.
“When you’re one of the last eight teams in the state anything is possible,” Marian Catholic coach John “Pilsey” Petrilyak said. “A bloop and a blast can get you a couple runs, and all of the sudden you’re beating somebody by two or three runs.”
Meanwhile, Nativity will face Dock Mennonite in its second straight Class A quarterfinal appearance. The Hilltoppers went on a run to the semifinals in 2025, ultimately falling to Southern Fulton.
“We have a lot of experience in the postseason and we brought seven juniors back from last year’s team that all played a good amount,” Nativity coach Ben Kreiger said. “Having them on the roster again this year, we’re going to bring the energy again and we call it the underdog mentality.”
