Jan. 15—MANDAN — The Jamestown High School gymnastics team was down two, consistent scorers on Thursday.
That didn't stop the Blue Jays from competing.
"Being down those two consistent scorers can be hard but the rest of the team really pulled together to help keep our team score close to where it's been all season," JHS head gymnastics coach Bre Carlson said. "It takes four individual scores on all four events to make a team score. Tonight each girl on our team was able to contribute a score to the team total.
"We talk a lot at practice about how each athlete can better themselves and their gymnastics to help the team get better and that really showed tonight when everyone helped us build our team score," she said.
The Blue Jays placed third at the Mandan Invitational with a team score of 138.775. Dickinson took home the meet title with 149.400 points while Minot nabbed the second-place spot. Minot tallied a team score of 142.775. Jamestown will be in action next on Jan. 23 at the Jamestown Gymnastics Club. The meet is scheduled to begin at 5:30 p.m.
Jamestown's Aubrey Krapp and Hayden Olson were sidelined due to injuries on Thursday. Both of the seniors are nursing ankle injuries. Olson still competed on uneven bars where she scored a 7.400. Krapp did not compete at the meet.
"The energy the girls brought today was infectious," Carlson said. "Going into a seven-team meet without two of our seniors was a bit intimidating but the girls rallied around each other to keep the energy high and it paid off."
Gradee Van Gilder, one of the Jays' eighth graders nailed a new vault for the first time earning her the highest vault score of the season and the third highest score for the Jays. Keira Andersen, the team's other eighth grader, scored the Jays' best score on balance beam. Her 9.325 placed her fourth overall.
Sophomores Baynx Kirschenmann and Brooklyn Waldie also had a good day.
"This season bars has been a bit of an uphill battle for them but they were able to compete routines that added to our team score," Carlson said. "Both of them have added in quite a bit of difficulty into their beam routines recently and their hard work paid off today as they both were able to take home placements on that event."
The Jays' two seniors who were able to compete — Sutton Van Gilder and McKenna Pettys also had some good wins for the day. The duo posted the Jays' top-two bar scores. Van Gilder also landed in a tie for third on vault with a score of 9.200.
"The small but mighty team did some big things today," Carlson said. "I think they have finally found their groove for the season."
