Injuries have been the Cleveland Guardians’ biggest opponent over the last few weeks. With that in mind, the team has avoided injuries to its pitching staff until now.
On Wednesday evening against the Minnesota Twins, Royce Lewis smoked a ball directly off Tim Herrin's left elbow, his throwing arm. The exit velocity of Lewis’ hit was nearly 90 mph.
Herrin immediately took off his glove, grabbed his arm, pounded the ground in frustration, and started walking toward Cleveland’s dugout before being met by the team’s head trainer.
To no one’s surprise, Herrin exited the game as Shawn Armstrong came as Cleveland’s new pitcher.
Many were bracing themselves for the worst-case scenario, considering Herrin’s immediate reaction. The good news is that X-rays on his elbow came back negative, and the team is officially calling the injury a “left elbow contusion.”
“It’s a contusion just above the elbow. Obviously, gonna be really sore. So we need to, - time will tell, but fortunately, no break or anything like that,” said manager Stephen Vogt after the game.
Herrin owns a 3.06 ERA and a 1.30 WHIP with a whiff rate of 32 percent on the season. He is also one of just two left-handers in Cleveland’s bullpen.
Even though the team confirmed that Herrin didn’t fracture anything, it still wouldn’t be surprising to see the Guardians make a bullpen move.
The team’s reliever core has been starved for more depth and a fresh arm for the last few weeks and is limping to the All-Star break as assembled.
If Herrin does end up on the injured list, Cleveland has a couple of options to fill his spot in the bullpen. Lefties Logan Allen and Will Dion could supply depth. Codi Heuer could also be an intriguing option.
As Vogt said, the good news is that Herrin didn't suffer a break, but this injury could still create some short-term hurdles for the Guardians.
