The Cleveland Guardians entered their four-game series against the Chicago White Sox trailing by 1.0 game in the American League Central. After all four games were played at Progressive Field over the weekend, that’s exactly where the teams still stand in the division.
Cleveland and Chicago split their four-game set, with the Guardians winning the first two and the White Sox taking the final two.
Here’s what manager Stephen Vogt had to say after the game.
The weather was not on either team’s side over the weekend. That included Sunday, as the game was delayed twice before the first pitch.
The game was supposed to start at 1:40 PM, but was delayed until 2:30. There was still plenty of water on the warning track, though, which delayed the game again to a 3:30 start time.
Today was really unfortunate,” said Vogt. “That cell hit us harder than we thought, and we needed more time than we anticipated to get the [warning] track ready. When I walked out there, it was not ready; [we] could not safely send players out on the field.”
Vogt thought that the multiple delayed starts impacted his starting pitchers' performance. Tanner Bibee allowed six earned runs over four innings, including three home runs.
“It's just unfortunate that Tanner had already warmed up and I definitely think it affected him,” continued Vogt. “Anytime you have to stay warm for an hour and a half, after you started, it's going to be difficult, but I thought he battled.”

The biggest bright spot in this loss was the home runs from Chase DeLauter and Gabriel Arias. These two blasts accounted for five of Cleveland’s six runs.
In terms of DeLauter, he continues his tear since coming off the injured list. The rookie continues to hit the ball hard, but Vogt is more impressed with how he’s adapted in some of his at-bats.
“[Chase] has been swinging about well and he's starting to really learn how he's being pitched and, it was really good to see him turn on that fastball,” said Vogt.
Cleveland’s skipper also noted that, “Gabby can hit. Got a mistake and didn't miss it.”
Sunday represented a second unexpected bullpen game for the Guardians, after Friday night’s two-hour rain delay in the fourth inning. Again, Cleveland’s reliever core answered the call.
Franco Aleman, Colin Holderman, Erik Sabrowski, Hunter Gaddis, Shawn Armstrong, Tim Herrin, and Cade Smith combined to allow just one earned run over five innings.
Cleveland’s skipper again credited his group
“The whole bullpen was [phenomenal],” continued Vogt.
“I mean, they stepped up on a day. All of them were hot. I mean, they pitched so much over this weekend. And as soon as the situation with Tanner, they all stepped up. I got to give so much credit to those bullpen guys. They threw a ton over this 10-game stretch, and they were all fantastic.”
