The WIAA state track and field meet will take place June 5-6 at Veterans Memorial Stadium in La Crosse.

The area had several individual state champions in 2025 – not to mention the De Pere and Green Bay Notre Dame boys squads winning team championships – and there should be a few more titles on the way this season.

Here are just a few boys and girls who could make headlines this weekend.

Lincoln Arneson, jr., Denmark

He didn’t advance past preliminaries in the Division 2 400-meter dash at state as a sophomore, but that should change this year.

Arneson ran a personal-best 48.20 seconds at sectionals, the top time in the state for D2 competitors.

He also qualified in the 200 after finishing with a PR 21.86 in regionals and following with a 22.13 at sectionals.

Lera Black, jr., Ashwaubenon

She will make her state debut as part of the D1 field in both the pole vault and triple jump.

It’s even more impressive considering how inexperienced she was in the triple jump entering this season. She broke the school record in the event while also setting the program record in the pole vault.

Black had a vault of 12 feet, 6 inches in the pole vault at sectionals. Only Hartland Arrowhead’s Elise Schroeder (13-3) had a better sectional performance in the state.

It will be difficult for Black, or anybody, to beat Schroeder.

The University of Illinois commit is the two-time defending D1 state champion and finished runner-up as a freshman.

Maximus Davis, jr., Green Bay Preble

The Hornets have made history before even getting to La Crosse.

The program had three pole vaulters qualify for the D1 state meet for the first time, and it’s also believed to be the first time it has had three athletes qualify in a single event.

Davis will be joined on the big stage by teammates Jacob Peruzzi and Caleb Wilke, and he enters with one of the best chances of any of the 26 competitors in the field to win a title.

Davis had the best sectional performance in the state last week with a 15-6 and performed well throughout the season.

The Hornets have three state champions in the event the past 13 years, a list that includes Jake Wallenfang (2013), Lucas McCormick (2017) and Augustus Counard-Ciechanowski (2024).

Davis finished tied for 16th at state in 2025 with a 13-6, but it’s a good bet he will place higher this time.

His sectional vault is the same height former Germantown standout Josh Brunner won state with last season.

Hunter Dehart, so., Coleman

There were only six freshmen in D3 to qualify for an individual event at the boys state meet last season, and Dehart shined on the big stage.

He finished runner-up in the shot put with a 57-2.50 and fifth in the discus with a 157-07.

It’s not a surprise he qualified in both events again this year, achieving a PR in the shot put with a 61-10 at the Pulaski Elite Invitational and matching that distance at the D3 Hilbert sectional.

Dehart had a PR 184-6 in the discus in May.

The bad news for Dehart? He is in the same field as Chris Marcell, and everybody will be a big underdog against the Marathon senior and Oklahoma commit.

Marcell was one of the biggest stars of the state meet last season, setting a D3 record in the shot put with a 61 and a state-record 211-04 in the discus.

Dehart isn’t the only Cougar who should shine at state.

Kolton Peters is competing in the 110 and 300 hurdles and is coming off dominant sectional performances.

The junior clocked a 14.50 in the 110, which was the fastest D3 time of any sectional. Peters also turned in the top sectional time in the 300 with a season-best 38.85.

Peters has put together a spectacular 2025-26 for Coleman as a three-sport athlete.

He rushed for 1,395 yards and 17 touchdowns in football and led the basketball team with 16.5 points, 8.5 rebounds and 3.2 assists per game.

Ella Denor, sr., Denmark

The University of Wisconsin-Parkside commit had her footprints all over the D2 state meet in 2025, competing in the 100 and 200 and as part of the 400 relay.

She finished fifth in the 100, seventh in the 200 and fifth in the 400 relay.

Denor will be just as busy this season, competing in the 100 and as part of the 400 and 800 relay teams.

It wouldn’t be a surprise for Denor to top last season’s fifth-place state finish in the 100. She ran a PR 12.16 at sectionals, which was better than anyone besides Kettle Moraine Lutheran senior Sydney Falkowski (12.11), who was the state runner-up as a junior.

Emerson Fabry, sr., Pulaski

The only thing Fabry might be better at than running is her academics, considering she has a 4.2 grade-point average.

The Northern Illinois commit for cross-country and track will compete at D1 state in both the 800 and 1,600.

Fabry finished fifth in the 800 at state last season with a time of 2:14.13.

Her sectional time last week was 2:14.56, which was only topped by Menomonie senior and University of Washington commit Lauren McCalla (2:12) for the best in the state. It was Fabry’s top time in the event this season.

She also ran a PR 5:04.86 in the 1,600.

Mason Hofherr, sr., Marinette

Will compete in three events in D2, including the 100, 200 and as part of the 400 relay.

Hofherr just missed out on a podium finish in the 200 last season after finishing seventh.

He has been in top form in his state individual events in recent weeks.

Hofherr ran a PR 10.90 in the 100 at sectionals after running a 10.99 at regionals. He had a PR 21.39 in the 200 at regionals and a 21.93 at sectionals.

A podium finish in both events is not out of the question.

Grady Lenn, sr., De Pere

The Wisconsin commit entered last season as one of the top D1 runners in the state in the 1,600 and 3,200 events. He finished it as the undisputed best.

Lenn won state championships in the events and set record times while doing it, finally beating former Onalaska star and future Badgers teammate Manny Putz in both races.

There has been nothing about his senior season to suggest that Lenn won’t bring home a championship or two by the end of the weekend.

He won the cross-country state title in the fall and enters state track with the top 1,600 sectional time at 4:13.02, which came after he had a season-best 4:06.22 to kick off May.

Lenn had a PR 8:39.62 in the 3,200 at the Arcadia Invitational in California in April, which was good for fourth overall.

Kaylin Thomson, jr., West De Pere

The standout hurdler will be busy at state, competing in the 100 and 300 hurdles and as part of the Phantoms’ 800 relay.

She’s had a big season in the 100 hurdles after placing seventh at state as a sophomore.

Thomson set a PR with a 14.56 at the Fox River Classic Conference Meet last month, and her 14.64 at sectionals was the second-best in the state behind West Bend West’s Rylee Faehling (a PR 14.60) and just ahead of Ashwaubenon junior Jamyana Witte and Hamilton senior Macy Price, both of whom clocked a 14.70.

Faehling also could be Thomson’s biggest obstacle in the 300 hurdles. The two went 1-2 for the top sectional times in the state, with Faehling finishing with a dominant PR of 41.65 and Thomson with a PR 44.80.

Thomson earned a podium finish in the event last season, finishing sixth.

Alex Van Helvoirt, jr., Wrightstown

He might be the best high jumper in program history.

Van Helvoirt should compete for the title in D2 after putting up a PR 6-7 at sectionals, which tied Winneconne’s Colton Tisler for the best in the state.

He had broken the school record of 6-5 set by both Bruce Lamers in 1976 and Jason Gerend in 1993 when he had a 6-6 at the West De Pere quad in April. He repeated the 6-6 feat two more times before topping himself at sectionals.

Van Helvoirt is attempting to become the first Wrightstown boy to win an individual state event since Terry Vickman in the long jump in 1996 and the second to win the high jump after Lamers captured back-to-back titles in 1976 and 1977.

Bradyn Wendorff, sr., Gillett

Enters as one of the favorites in the D3 800, coming off a sectional performance in which he finished in 1:56.54.

That’s the second-best time of any of the 17 runners in the field and the best performance of Wendorff’s career. It was almost 2 seconds better than his regional time.

Wendorff was 12th at state as a junior and 14th as a sophomore. His final state run should be his best.
