Girls basketball roundup: Maddyn Greenway scores 53 as Providence Academy advances to state semis

The later games of the girls basketball state tournament on Tuesday was focused on the smaller schools after the big schools played in the morning and early afternoon.

Maddyn Greenway demonstrated the show wasn’t over.

Greenway scored 53 points as top-seed Providence Academy beat No. 8-seed Central Public Schools103-68 on Tuesday in the Class 2A state tournament at Williams Arena. Beckett Greenway added 25 points for the Lions and Emma Millerbernd had 14. Josie Kamps led Central, which features Norwood-Young America, with 25 points, while Avery Smith scored 19.

The evening session was all about Class 2A.

Fifth-seed Perham beat No. 4 Rochester Lourdes 66-63 and will face Providence Academy at 6 p.m. Friday at Williams Arena.

On the other side of the bracket, No. 2 Duluth Marshall beat No. 7 Sauk Centre 65-38 behind 35 points from Chloe Johnson. Third-seed New London-Spicer beat No. 6 Minnehaha Academy 55-48.

Class 4A quarterfinals​


One later afternoon game saw a Class 4A matchup between Rochester Mayo and Monticello.

After Monticello held a one-point halftime advantage, Mayo pulled out a close game to advance to the semifinals with a 73-71 victory. The Spartans will play Rosemount at 8 p.m. Thursday in the Class 4A semifinals. Second-seed Rosemount advanced with a 71-56 win against No. 7-seed Chanhassen.

Amelia Mills scored 26 points for third-seeded Mayo, which also got 17 points from Maggie Dyer and 10 from Mia Banks. Samantha Voll led No. 6-seed Monticello with 25 points.

Class 3A quarterfinals​


In the later Class 3A quarterfinal games, No. 2-seed Benilde-St. Margaret’s beat No. 7 Rock Ridge 88-53 and No. 3 Marshall beat No. 6 Totino-Grace 70-44. Benilde-St. Margaret’s will face Marshall at 2 p.m. Thursday in the semifinals.

Kiera Willis led four players in double-figure scoring with 19 points for Benilde-St. Margaret’s. Sydney Friedly had 15 points, Mirabel Wismer had 13 and Pressly Watkins had 12 for the Knights. Alexis Lamppa scored 16 points for Rock Ridge.

Marshall got 18 points from Avery Schneekloth, 17 from Avery Fahl and 16 from Reese Drake. Maria Radabaugh scored 17 points for Totino-Grace and Ava Litecky added 13
